"Ford Spain has announced that from Monday (today) it is offering a 25% discount on 6,000 of the estimated 25,000 cars it has in stock.

All models will be available at the discount until January 24, with the exception of the new designs of the Ka, Fiesta and Kuga."

Finally discounts that have been available made official - perhaps they'll try it in UK

They are only bringing the price in line with the UK prices due to the Euro riding in value against the £.

Is there a business opportunity here for the Car-Import-Brokers to set up as Car-Export-Brokers to sell LHD cars to Europe via the UK?

It's a start but it ain't enough.

Before 2009 is out 50% off sales will be common, even in rip-off Britain.

This recession is going to be a depression in everything but name and the days of banks lending silly amounts so that someone can withdraw equity from a vastly inflated house price to buy a 20K car let alone the 25K plus that many have been buying have long gone.

For days now car markers and car unions have been on the news saying that the banks not lending is what is stopping people from buying - ignoring the fact that the majority of the company is up to their eyeballs in debt.

The banks ain't going to lend people money to buy cars because they only lent during the boom when house prices were rising by a grand per week. Now house prices are collapsing there is no equity left in them, hence no MEW so no loans to buy cars.

Of course, this won't stop Brown trying to start car loan lending in some way as he is a desperate PM wanting to stay in power but, in truth, the party is over for car makers and dealers alike.

Ironically, the first car company that blinks and reduces prices will probably be the one to benefit as there is a limited number of people out there with hard cash able to buy. Ford in Spain has blinked but 25% will just be the start.

Who are you? What have you got against me? Why is your life so empty that you seem intent on hounding a stranger via the Internet whom you have never met?

Surely you have better things to do with your time?

My gosh - you are stalking me online via this forum!

My gosh - you have been going back through my postings and falsely claiming that I am quoting in full other people's posts when, as anyone can clearly see from the trees of the threads, that I am not doing so.

I find what you are doing to be very disturbing.

I do not know you, I have never met or talked to you in r/l but you have obviously decided to set out and try and rubbish me on this forum.

I find what you have done very disturbing indeed, very disturbing.

Only looks false now because the Mods had to "snipquote" you. I am sure you can find manny other posts of your which have been "SQ".

Don't get paranoid. I replied to you in those two threads, but you seem not to have noticed that your posts got "SQ". How many other are there like that? I do not know as I had not replied to any of your other mega-snipped posts.

Jbif, the mods aren't on here all the time you know ;-) And it does take time to edit threads and so deleting can be easier. But once a few people reply to that post.... if you delete it all the replies go to so would include yours ;-)

Let us all chill out a bit. I hope moderating over Christmas for those of us about is not going to be too busy.

Yes we have. Britain has been cheap - look at the queues of Euro-zone tourists who have been coming here to buy everything but booze.

Am I the only person around here getting bored of tawse's end-of-the-world predictions more suited to the nuttiest on housepricecrash.com (which can be good for a giggle).

Anyway, if first-hand cars will be 50% off, what will that do to the second hand market?

More like, Ford et al will stop producing cars on spec, and within a couple of years they will be able to ask what they like as excess stock reaches nil. Second hand car prices will be well up within 5 years if tawse is right.

You are not alone!

With the current exchange rates, rises of 30% will be inevitable for cars, electronics, and all other goods manufactured in euro and dollar based economies. The current heavy discounting will only continue whilst excess stock sits around in the uk.

I am personally fed up of the doom and gloom on the TV/news. Yes it's bad but if we all cut back too much we will make this worse for all of us. I'm not suggesting we all go and buy new cars, TVs, etc.

And if car companies do cut back on making cars because we stop buying new.... what will those on here wanting a second hand one do in the next few years? Car companies I assume won't slash prices they will slash production (and jobs).

Besides the rumours I hear are that in the new year prices of things like LCD TVs will go up 30% due to the strength of the Euro. They might be on sale now but when stock runs out... Sony certainly are said to be doing this. As will no doubt car companies.

Not motoring related but I have been in Manchester all day, took me 3 hours to get a PVR. I had to phone my mum in the end and get my mum to check stock in the Argos store I was in becasue I just could not get to any of the catalologues. I also had to take something back to ASDA on the way and people were queing and beeping their horns just to get into the car park, I was so relieved I left my car at home.

If today was anything to go to buy people are certainly spending, I think the big difference is retailers margins have been cut. I have a strong feeling a well known electrical chain won't be with us this time next year. If it can happen to Woolworths it can happen to anybody.

I tend to believe the difficulty of getting goods ( as in the PVR example ) is down to many business's keeping a very limit stock due to not having the funds to carry stock.

Once the current bloodbath is over, I think we will find the dealers carrying far less stock. Order and wait will be the norm.

The trouble is with "25% off" they have been making hollow claims like this even during the good times and nobody takes any notice anymore, nobody believes list prices anymore anyway.

I also do read a lot of financial sites such as oraclemarket and goldmansachs and it is a very gloomy outlook for us in the UK. I also looked at a loan for a car, they started at 9.9% on the main page of the banks which is bad and when I applied i was offered a typical rate of 16.9% - 19.9%. I have credit cards with lower interest than that!

Ford, unlike some manufacturers, have never produced cars "on Spec"-every vehicle coming down the line has been ordered by someone-a dealer,a chain of dealers, hire firms etc..No Ford vehicle is manufactured unless there is an order for it.

For an individual buyer it's the best way of getting (a) exactly what you want, (b) a car that hasn't stood around in a compound for weeks or months and (c) a car which hasn't been test driven by numerous prospective customers.

Not quite "never", I guess - if you're old enough to remember pictures of those masses of cars stored at Dagenham, including some bizarre colours that no-one had chosen or ever would. But it certainly does seem to be the case now with Ford. I agree with L'Escargot, it makes buying a new car almost fun, waiting for the Genk robots to finish their work.
On the other hand several expensive BMW's (I mean, very expensive) have stayed unregistered in exactly the same spot on our local dealer's forecourt for more than three months now; they came in just before 1 September and look as if they haven't even been washed since then (bird dirt, etc). What happens if/when someone buys one - do they get a fresh service thrown in? Is anyone really going to buy a Z4 as brand new with moss growing nicely on the canvas top?

Then why was may dads Fiesta Ghia produced in March 1996 according to the VIN but registered in December 1997, a good year after Ford stoped making the 1.3 Endura models as nobody wanted to spend nearly £12,000 on a Fiesta with a push rod engine back in 96.

Also why does one of my neighbours have a Fiesta MK5.5 (1994-1995 model) on a 1999 V plate? It would suggest its been sitting in a field for at least four years.

I've seen quite a few J reigstered Escort MK4s too despite producted was stopped in 1990 and J plates were registered between Aug 1991 and July 1992.
