I think it's about the same as the length of a piece of string.
A quick perusal of this site and others will tell you it's between 40,000 and 100,000 miles and 4 years and 10 years old depending mainly on where you live and how greedy the dealers with the encouragement of the manufacturer want to be.
In my case (1.9TDi) I gave up with looking at all the different suggestions and just changed it together with the water pump at 4 years - 59,000 miles.

Replaced mine on a 1.8t Passat together with water pump at 70k/8 years. My mechanic mate did it though it didn't look technically difficult when I watched him. If/when it breaks, there are 20 valves all set to wreak havoc.
