Hi has anyone experienced problems with bmw gearboxs?
We have had a 97 728 auto dragged in as a non starter,the dash display shows its still in D so we think thats the reason it wont start but whats caused it? The owner reported that alternator light came on on way home and he couldnt select reverse so he pushed it in neutral. We have replaced the alt and checked for codes-none showing.
Scanner says the gearbox is in 4th is there a way we can override it temporarily to try and start it to move it into workshop?
Any help would be much appreciated

May be an idea to check the mechanical linkage under the car to see if the selector lever is connected ok to the shift selector switch.hth
