Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 02 1.0 aftermarket cd player problem

02 1.0 aftermarket cd player problem - sails north
hi, so the aftermarket cd player on this corsa doesnt play sound at the speakers unless the ignition key is out. it seems to be playing albeit with no sound with the car started and also with ignition on. once the key is out it will play normally with sound until the key is used to try to disengage the steering lock, at this point the sound goes off. there is no flicker as this happens. power supply seems uninterupted.

any ideas?

its branded mutant, bought from one of the national motoring stores.

i should add that its worked fine till about two weeks ago, since then its only played with ignition key out
