while driving for a while a spanner shows In dash,then there's no response from the throttle,happens in all gears when foot off throttle,I then push the throttle a few times,then seems ok again for a while

What engine code is it?, Vx used several different 1.8s around this period
Getting the fault codes read would definitely make diagnosis easier; I don't think the 'paperclip trick' will work on a facelift Vectra B though.

Agreed. Takes all the guess work out of what's wrong. The car/spanner light is indicating that the car has gone into 'limp home mode'. Could be any number of things of which hopefully a code read out would pin point.
