Lost anti theft wheel nut remover - pullgees
I have four stud alloy wheels with three normal nuts and one anti theft nut. I've lost the socket that removes the anti theft nut, how do I undo it?

1:factory/dealer fitted , 2: or bought from an accesorry shop?

answer No, 1 correctly and this could be a clue

if 2: try your local slow-fit places

Your local independant garage can buy a specialist tool to remove locking wheel nuts. Ring around till you find someone who has made the investment and can do it. Tyre fitters can sometimes help, but not in my experience.

I did this a few years ago - the locking wheel nuts on my Golf GTi turned out to be dealer fitted as part of the PDI.
My local VW dealer had a ful set of "keys" in a special tool kit, he whipped off the nuts and sold me a new set - he couldn't just sell me a new locking key.

As other have said it depends where they came from in the first place.

I'd get it sorted soonish as now you have noticed it's missing you are bound to have a puncture soon.

A friend of my wife went with us to get some new tyres, from Costco, for her recently purchased Focus. They could not find the special key, so we went to the supplying dealer and asked for one..
They said they had not got one and would have to order it. I said we were rejecting the car under the sales of goods act as it was not fit for purpose.
The store man then went and found one!

I hate Ford dealers.

Problem solved. I went to my local garage. After fiddling around with various sockets, there was no choice but to resolve to brute force. He used a cold chisel in a pneumatic gun to shock them loose a tiny bit. After a dose of that he hammered on a tight fitting socket and the nuts finally surrendered and unwound. Cost £10 which was a lot cheaper that a tyre fitting bay would charge. So all I've I've got to do is buy a new set which will cost about £20.
I have a question about the replacements. Will they need to be designed for the wheel or would any fit if I give make and model etc of my vehicle?

Wheelnuts are designed to fit individual wheels. The taper, length and thread have to match your wheels and stud threads. If you have standard manufacture fit alloys then the nuts will be supplied to match your wheels.

Two auto shops offered me wheel locking nuts that were suitable for my car; they were not interested in the make of the alloy. So I'm wondering if the seating and thickness and taper of the alloys around or adjacent to the hub studs are the same as standard wheels.

what car is it?

I have the following experience

Honda - found a key code in with the spare wheel - gave it to the local dealer, new socket arrived 2 days later, £6.50.

Ford - i didn't have the code this time (apparent if I did they can fax to Germany(?) and get a spare socket) so they said they would charge me 0.5h labour and £30 to remove the old ones and fit a new set. £60.

So i didn't do that. Quiet word with the mechanic and he wiped off the locking bolts and fitted standard ones for £8. The bolts are under a cover on this car so no one is any the wiser.

Pullgees

Cant answer that one, there may be an industry standard for relevant angles. A visual check for fit and interference may suffice. The only suggestion I might make is the use of engineers chalk on the taper to see that there is full contact.

I'll take a look at the spare and look see for a code. I'll see what a TSW (make of wheel) stockist has to say and I like the chalk tip. I might in the end simply fit ordinary wheel nuts as long as they fits snug, it's only Fiesta after all. Why anybody would go to the expense of fitting alloys to a bog standard Fiesta is beyond me, I bought it like that.

So you're driving around with one wheel nut short on each wheel at the moment?

Did you look in the little bag that holds your wheel wrench?

All the dealerships have a case, which their mechanics have access to, with different sized wheel nut keys for all their models. They might do for the cost of a drink.
