Car broken into - repair lock - prender
Hi,

I left my house this morning to find that someone had broken into my car (Ford Escort). Nothing was taken, as there was nothing to take, but there is a hole next to the drivers door lock where they forced in a screwdriver. The lock still works so I don't think I have to replace it. Can it just be filled with something-or-other? After a quick search and a reply on another forum I've been told to have a small plate welded into the door. Does anyone have any experience of fitting these - how much does this sort of thing cost?

Another thing I'm thinking about is reporting it. I don't think for a second that I'll get anything from the insurance as I'm hoping the cost of repair will be less than the Excess. I have heard though that the simple fact of reporting it will necessarily involve the insurance company and so will effect my renewal whether they admit it or not.

Thanks in advance

Take the door card off the inside, and knock the panel back into shape, fill any holes, touch up any damaged paint and rebuild the lock and door panel.

Report it and get a crime number.

Plod management and parliament are driven by statistics - so if you don't report it then crime could be seen to be decreasing and some forums members may be thought to be unnecessary ;)

I've reported it now. My only hesitation was that I would get some backlash from the insurance company (however slight).

I've phoned a few garages and they've all said they need to see it, fair enough I suppose, but I was wondering if it's something I could do myself. I have no idea of what fillers etc. would be necessary .

AFAIK, you don't have to contact the insurance, only if it were major damage and you were going to claim on it.

Luke.

P.S: I work for da pigs :D
