Ford EDU idle the day away.... - micromouse
Hi All,

I have just bought a 2nd H Ford Escort L reg (1.4 monopoint injection) with a little problem. (I know they have more problems than that!) Sometimes it stalls when idleing. Considering the garage who sold it catagorically stated that it was not injection I would rather not go back... looking through the 'net indications seem to be reset the ECU... any comments from anyone? (especially how exact to I reset a ford escort ecu??? or sohuld I just return the car and say fix it please..... (I doubt they have the equipment)

I'd return it and say fix it, assuming that you can actually illustrate the fault.

Whilst it is unlikely, there could be some very expensive reasons for the misbehaviour. If you have anybody working on it, then your chances of compensation of assistance in the future wil be massively reduced.

I guess the only exception would be if this is something that a Ford dealer could quickly look up on the ECU for you allowing you to go back to the original seller with a bit more information.

Not an uncommon fault on these cars. Usually thorough cleaning of the throttle area will do the trick although it can be more sinister in that it needsa new throttle podition sensor or more unusually a new idle speed stepper motor. If you disconnect the battery for a short while it will revert the ecu to its basic state and then starting the engine and allowing it to idle for 10 minutes then giving it a 10 mile run in mixed traffic conditions has on occasion sorted out idle problems but only when everything else is right.

My Dad's L Reg Fiesta 1.3, which also uses single point injection, kept cutting out when idling. This started happening about a month after it was serviced by a local garage. Cleaning the spark plugs prevented this, but you had to clean them every couple of days; too much like hard work!

Found the garage had fitted the wrong spark plugs. The giveaway was they couldn't be set to the recommened gap without almost breaking the earth electrode off.

I bought the correct plugs from Ford main dealer and fitted them. No trouble whatsoever since, and this was several months ago. Interesting to note the correct plugs were also factory set at the recommended gap, which I myself usually find is the case.

Good Luck!
