hi i recently bought a high (92k) focus 1.6 tdci have found it quite rattly on start up from cold is this normal?
took it back to dealer and they changed the tensioner for outer belts but its still same runs fine when warm but as soon as its under load when cold it sounds like a bag of spanners
hope you have some ideas
cheers tommo
Modern CR engines are pretty quiet when cold, and the 1.6 Ford / PSA HDi particularly so. Pretty sure there's something wrong with this one. You need someone who can read the live data from the engine ECU to try and find out what though.
Crankshaft pulley is well known failure on 2.0 HDi that causes similar symptoms. Not many 1.6s have got to enough miles to know if the problem has carried over - but it's worth a look at the pulley.
PS just because there are no fault codes doesn't mean that there are no sensor values that are out of kilter that would only be picked up by an eagle eyed tech reading the live data as the engine warms up....
Could be the inside of the engine and injectors are gunked up. Have you tried a couple of tanks full of BP Ultimate to clean the inside and injectors ?
The injectors should produce a fine multi-mist spray as well as additional tiny amounts of fuel to counteract diesel rattle. The additive package in BP Ultimate specifically helps counteract diesel rattle in the 1.6 TDCi as well as keeping the inside of the engine clean, hence the reason it's recommended for this particular engine.
Also an engine oil and filter change would help if one hasn't been done recently.
New Focus goes back to the top of the class with low CO2 petrol engines, excellent ride and handling compromise, classy interior and a stunning £750 Driver Assistance Pack.
The old Ford Focus was Britain’s best selling car and clearly the class leader. Even VW admitted that Focus qualities were its goal when it designed the Golf Mk V.
Ford advises annual services at 12K miles. Is it worth carrying out an interim service at 6 mths/3K miles?
My car, a Ford Focus, only does 6K miles/year...
