1999 2.0 petrol burning oil horrifically... - Lucky 7
Hello chaps - I really need some advice

I have just acquired a T reg Mondeo with the 2.0 zetec engine. Has 153k on it, however it drives really well, and the engine sounds fine with no knocking or tapping. On inspection though, there was no oil showing on the dipstick at all. Popped some 5w-30 in it, and then some more, and eventually almost the whole can, but still reading empty on the stick. Definitely no leaks underneath. However, running the thing now results in horrific clouds of blue smoke.

Drove it ten miles and it was smoking so badly I got pulled over. Thus, I'm guessing it's for the knackers yard - however as it sounds and drives so well, I'm wondering whether it could actually be something wrong with the dipstick and I've ended up overfilling it? Or if it's something like the valve stem oil seals that used to plague Escorts? I'm stuck with the thing so if it's a feasible repair I may as well give it a go. Or is it just a dead engine...

What do you mean by a "can";4.5/5.0l. of oil will well overfill a 2.0 Zetec.On an engine of that milage,I'd be looking at using 20w/50 anyway.Drain it all out and start again.

Overfilled. Drain and refill with the correct amount. Either the owner broke the dipstick and bodged a repair or he grabbed one, the wrong one, from a scrap yard. Regards Peter

I used about three quarters of a 5 litre can - apparently the sump capacity is 4.2l. As I say, I was adding a bit at a time and checking the dipstick but it just didn't seem to be going up by much - having just come by the car, I had no idea how it had been treated etc. and assumed the worst.

An oil change is definitely the plan - is it worth going for a thicker oil this time? Have read that Zetec engines suffer from sticking valves etc. if filled with anything other than 5w-30, but then again it's done some miles!

No, stick to 5w-30 oil, I usually use Ford 5w-30 oil myself. Also change the oil filter while you're about it.

My own Mondeo 2.0L has done 130K miles, not really that significantly different to yours. I typically top up just once between oil changes (I use 10,000 mile change intervals) and that's only a cupful! This is, of course, using 5w-30.

If you don't feel up to doing an oil change then I'm sure your local Ford "Rapid Fit" will be only to pleased to do it for you.

Definitely stay with 5W30, the Zetec engines require this oil and don't take kindly to anything else.

Thanks for your help guys - I will try an oil change and replace the dipstick. The car was very cheap anyway, so am prepared for the worst, but it would be nice if it turned out to be okay! It's the Si model so looks quite good with the alloys etc, and is a tidy handler too :-)

Use the Ford Formula E stuff. It's very good, and cheap too. Readily available for <£20 for a 5 litre can.

Incidentally, one can should top the sump up to the max marking on the dipstick, and leave a little for topups. They hold about 4.5 litres.

I suspect you are going to need a very big drain can!

Cheers

If have problem with low compression or your engine smokes and burns oil, then it's worth to try staff from this site: www.engine-recondition.co.uk Added it to my fifth car allready and gained same results as the ones before: no smoke and oil consumption what so ever! Can 100% recomend it as it saved me a money
Tried this on following cars:
* Vauxhall cavalier 1.7td (isuzu)1993
* Vauxhall combo 1.7d 1995
* BMW 320d 1999
* Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 petrol1999
* Honda Accord 2.0 Vtec (F20B6) 2002
All this cars had high mileage on their clocks and used a lot of oil (average 1liter every
600miles)
