98 1.6 Plastic Headlight Lens Foggy. How to clean? - Taylor
I'm sure the left headlight was part of a repair before I bought the car.

The plastic lens has yellowed and become opaque compared to the other colourless transparent OEM right one.

I wondered if there is any experience of this and will a very fine abrasive of some sort be able to cut back the outer discolouration and polish it back to a clearish lens?

The plastic would probably have discoloured right through. I'm afraid replacement is the only answer.

It was then part of an MOT failure, and a few goes with some polish got it looking a lot better.

Plenty of people (mainly in the USA) have sanded them down and then polished them back to a shine to remove that sandblasted look.

Try some Greygates Plastic Polish - the only place I know you can get it is on Ebay now.

This should do the job with some elbow grease.

We used to use this in the MOD for polishing aircraft plexiglass canopies, it works miracles on all sorts of plastics.
