What car? Discs or drums?

If drums, the classic cause is dust. Remove the drums and give them a good blow out.

If pads & discs are not worn out, they will require de-glazing. Removal of asbestos by manufacturers of friction material means that if you brake moderately, pads glaze up & squeal.Drivers that are heavy on brakes do not usually suffer this problem. It is almost impossible to completely eradicate this problem even with regular de-glazing and use of copper grease on backings & pins.

Are the brakes missing antivibration springs? I had to replace mine on my van as they were rusted away. Could a little shamfering off leading edge help?
