petrol consumption in brand new cars - pangolin
I've recently bought a new honda jazz 1.4 SE to replace an indentical model that was 5 years old. I'm very disappointed to be getting around 10mpg less for indentical journeys. I'm a "green" driver with a very gentle right foot. I've never had a brand new car before. The Honda dealer says its because its still "running in". How many miles is the running in period, and should there be this much difference?

Normally 500 ish miles before you can start to use high revs / drive less gently, but mpg will improve slowly over next 10k miles.
See HJ FAQ's on running in engines.

When new, my Jazz 1.4 CVT did about low to mid 40's per gallon. Within 3 months or so it was getting up to 50 odd and now easily achieves 55 per gallon.
Stick with it.

I don't remember ours ever doing anything other than 50MPG (on the trip).

Have you checked if it rolls freely, nothing binding?

Puts me in mind of the ancient anecdote about the old lady who bought a new Morris Minor and tok it back complaining that it ran roughly and used a lot of fuel. Mechanics tested it and found no problem until she got in the car to drive away. She pulled out the choke lever and hung her handbag on it......!
