Fix it or trade it? - egor110
Our v reg scenics back in the garage again. Last year the water pump bearing seized which cost 800 for new pump/cam belt , this week it started running rough and garage have checked spark plugs.ht leads, distributer cap which are all ok but theres low pressure in 4th cylinder so they think its either head gasket or the heads knackered . Estimated cost to fix 1200 quid if it needs a new head. So do i fix it or just trade it in?

A no brainer really unless your intention had been to keep it. Unless you feel you cannot pass the dealer a car with a known fault. Personally I`d have no quams about it having been regularly shafted by main dealers/large independants. Play dumb and get the best price you can

So when looking at a car would you just say i'd like to trade this in it's mot'd until sept had a service last sept then shut up and leave it up to the garage people to check the car out give it a test drive?
Theres a 97 primera with 46,000 miles on the clock for 1895 and a saab specialist has some 99 9-3's for under 3k all sensible miles, and theres a subaru legacy and forester 99 reg with 100k miles for under 3k i'm considering.
I used to have a primera , dead boring but dead relaible so tempted by that. What sort of trade in do you think i'd get considering there only asking 1895 for the primera nad 2995 for the saab 9-3?

If its running rough then the garage will know when they see it.

Price depends on what you are going to buy against it really.

Take it with you, look at a car and get an idea from 1 garage then you have a ball park figure to work with elsewhere.

If you do such a thing, they may take action to recover their loss, may they not?

If you trade it into a Main Dealer and assuming the saleman misses the faults then its a grey area for them .. a lot depends on what SIV (stand in value) they place on the car .. if they value it to trade out of down the auction then they wont really be bothered in chasing you ... typical SIV would be about £300 to £600 (you may be offered more in a deal due to the over allowance) in this scenario ... however trade it into an independant dealer who intends to retail it then you may find he pays you a visit a few days later to collect the difference.

Over the years we have taken a few wrong uns in PX we just put it down to "nature of the job" ..... HOWEVER I did once prosocute a private man who had clocked his trade in by a 100,000 miles ... he now has a criminal recored for theft thanks to the trading standards.
