Something to look at when stuck on the motorway - CGNorwich

The government seems to becom more detached from reality by the day.

According to today's Telegraph Lord Turner, head of the Government's Committee on Climate Change, has come up with a brand new idea to solve he energy problem.

As he says "why couldn't you put turbines every 300 yards up the central reservation of the motorway?"

Has this guy ever been a motor way or seen the size of a wind turbine come to that?

Does anyone else have any ideas what alternative uses we could use motorways for?

IIRC the cost of the meaga electronic notice boards on the side of motorways is frightening plus the disruption / lane closures to install them.
His idea was surely a little to early for 01/ 04/ 2008?

Probably in a back seat with dark windows around him. :-(

They are not too big on the back of his sail boat. :-(

It's bad enough having birds aim their messages at you without the risk of whole chopped birds dropping on you!

Besides, wind turbines are all very well in theory but we still need conventional generating capacity on standby for when we get becalmed...

Researching big wind turbines as part of my job the other day, I came across this interesting / scary clip. This would be quite entertaining in the middle of a motorway:-

If a wind turbine self-destructed like that in the middle of the rush hour, all the lanes would be come undertakers' lanes.....

Last year some outfit in the US had the idea of motorway wind farms powered by the air movement created by the traffic, not just natural wind, using horizontal turbines on overhead gantries:

The barrier type must be a non-starter. The new style concrete barriers are supposed to be zero-maintenance, not full of generating equipment. And cutting a big hole in them is surely inviting out-of-control vehicles to plough straight though!
