2004 CDTI Fault Diagnosis - billythechid
Hi I am experiencing a problem with my Vectra and a week on the well know diagnostic franchise is unable to isolate problem.

Symptoms: Starts fine but absolutely no guts and won't rev beyond 1400rpm. Was hooked up to tech 2 and fault (hole) found in intercooler which was replaced. There was also fuel pressure fault code but this went after intercooler replaced.

Garage looked at EGR and said that it was sticking. New EGR due to be fitted today. My concern is if it turns out not to be EGR where we go from here.

Any advice/ info appreciated.

There's a well-known diagnostic franchise?

Bosch?

Have they checked for a blocked exhaust? If it won't rev beyond 1400, it's something fairly major. Is that proper diesel in the tank? Have they changed the fuel filter?

A holed intercooler or an EGR fault won't stop it revving, or flag a fuel-pressure code - has that one really gone away?

They checked fuel quality and changed fuel filter at the beginning. They said that they changed intercooler because they were concerned that it was causing ECU to suppress fuel pressure.

I'm doubtful about the EGR too! Can you explain what you mean by blocked exhaust?

Thanks

An engine that won't rev up at all is in fairly serious difficulties. Either it can't suck in enough burnable air, it has very little fuel, or the combustion gases can't get out.

A stuck-open EGR might affect the burnable air bit; but to not rev over 1400...? [Why no EGR code, or low-flow on the MAF?]

A hole in the intercooler will affect boost pressure and over-speed the turbo; but it can't cause a fuel-pressure code, or stop it revving.

As there's no engine details; [1.9CDTi? 8-valve? 16-valve? 3.0 CDTi?] it's difficult to know if it's got a DPF or other exhaust-mounted soot trap - that might be blocked. Now that will definitely cause it not to rev....

Its a 120Bhp model (Sept 2004) not sure if thats 8v or 16v. My research tells me its not fitted with DPF.

Just spoken to garage and they say that they unplugged the EGR whilst on tech 2 and running their own live data but with no codes.

Cheers

Billy - I would also be looking to a blockage in the exhaust - Have you driven through floods recently and damaged the cat? Check it out before spending out good money on idle speculation of the diagnostician.

My company Vectra DTI was suffering similar problems and the garage had a field day replacing MAF sesors and EGR valves at horrendous cost when all that had gone wrong was a blocked cat.

Thanks for the info Helicopter.

Spoke to the garage and they reckoned that prob not exhaust blockage due to amount of smoke coming from exhaust when foot on the throttle. They will investigate for blockage however.....

Smoke? Colour?

White/ grey. Not black

Do a compression test and check the cam timing.

When/how did this problem start.

Short 1 mile journey from overnight cold parked up. Started car after 40mins stopped and symptoms started. left for 1hour re-started and ran normally for several miles. Parked overnight started and symptoms became perminant.

Can you explain compression test and cam timing reasoning? cheers.

The white/grey smoke. The diesel isn't burning. If it were lack of oxygen/EGR fault, you'd get black smoke; so it's getting diesel, has enough oxygen, but isn't firing properly - which suggests lack of compression/ignition.

As this didn't start after a paddle, then the cam timing, or late injection, comes to the fore.

It's an 8 valve single overhead cam engine.

if this is the 1.9 td 8valve engine then i have seen crank pully woodruf keys break its not a proper key just a soft lug this causes timming issues and flags up a cam fault (usually) would make sense from cold start engine harder to turn over resulting in slipping timming, i have seen egr stuck open on these engines so not been able to start, new one cures it, see what tommorow brings with the egr replacement

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.

The EGR valve has been replaced and much to my suprise all is well in Vectra land. I had to source the new EGR myself as the garage couldn't find one through Vx. A common problem by any chance??

In your first post you said 'New EGR due to be fitted today' so was the new one duff. Regards Peter

My local Mazda dealer had no air filter elements in stock for my 323TD at any of its two branches. But I was in luck as Halfords were able to oblige. Just-in-time stock control or sheer incompetence?
2004 CDTI Fault Diagnosis UPDATE! - billythechid
The garage initially did have a clue about the problems sourcing an EGR and assumed it would be same or next day delivery. The supplier said Vx had them in back order and to expect 3 weeks lead. I found one for slightly higher price from specialist delivered in 48 hours.

please tell me where you managed to get a EGR valve from, my vx dealer is telling me to expect upto 3 month wait and my Signum is so bad its undriveable.

Got mine from www.autovaux.co.uk they were v efficient.

thanks for the info. cheked their site and they only have EGR valves now for 2.0 DTH, mines a 1.9CDTi (120)

those looking for one for a Cdti (150) there is one place on Ebay selling them..

I would advise phoning them. Not everything they have in stock is listed on their website. Unless things have changed, don't email them either. A phone call is the most reliable way of getting hold of someone at autovaux.
2004 CDTI Fault Diagnosis UPDATE! - billythechid
I would second that from DD. Call them and i bet they will know where to get one even if they don't hold the stock.

SIGNUM

I have called autovaux and they can source one for next day delivery at £97.83 inclusive why not give them a call and ask for Keiron who dealt with the enquiry. I'm pretty sure yours will be the same as mine but you don't give year of your car.

All the best.
