02 reg 1.6 speedo died advice needed - nolan
Hi,

OK, speedo has died, the only thing that still works on the lcd is the gallons used, anything to do with mileage has stopped working.
The rev's, petrol etc in the cluster are all fine though.
Been advised the speedo is dead, the gearbox etc i'm told has been fully checked.
So, i understand i can buy one second hand from a parts specialist for around £40 to £70... better than the dealerships £600 inc fitting i was quoted.
But what happens with the mileage, does that get transfered into he new speedo or do you end up with the mileage the previous car had done? Also if you have the mileage of the old car, i know you woudn't be able to change it for obvious reasons, but how do you notify the correct people.
Any advice would be great thankyou.

So what does the gearbox have to do with it?

If this is the UK-spec K4M 700 16-valve engine, it doesn't have a vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox; the speed signal is networked from the ABS system.

Start by having the ABS system data looked at and verifying that the speed signal is leaving it's ECU on pin 22.

I don't know about the gear box, just everyone has said either something to do with the gearbox or the speedo is dead.

Ok for the ABS system data, i had a car electrician look at it last week, they did a lot of tests and plugged their computer into it to check if there was a reading coming from the car when traveling.... there was, he went 24mph. is that likely to confirm the ABS system data or am i missing the point and other things need to be checked?

If the ABS is definitely producing a speed signal; [this can be confirmed via the engine ECU] then checking that a signal is present at the display is the only test left before pod repairs are considered. [Nobody fits new.]

ah ok, i see what you mean... i'll check if that had been done, i'm only guessing so as i don't know as much about the car electronics of the speedo.
Saying that is does need a new pod cluster (a used one from a scrapyard/spares dealer) do you know what mileage would show on the speedo? IE the car the cluster came from or the ECU or the car your putting it in?

I don't get involved with "mileage correction" so I'm not sure exactly where a Megane Coupe of that year stores it's mileage.

It's quite possible that it's in both the engine ECU and the display - not sure if the UCH on a MK 1 would keep it too. If there's a conflict, then the higher one is used in all and can't be reset.

Why not just get your pod repaired and avoid all the re-coding hassle?

You can get the pod repaired? 3 technicians have suggested used pods..... I did ask about being able to fix the speedo alone. I got blank expressions so thought i was asking a daft question? I guess i end up thinking it was all enclosed. You saying that i should be able to get the pod repaired? Should any good car technician be able to do that if so?

Specialist firms like BBA-Reman [01634 230055 and let it ring] do it.
