multitronic gearbox - john bax
I was looking into Google for details of problems with Multitronic gearboxes fitted to Diesel A6 like mine, and I came upon an ongoing discussion back in 2005 that concerned "cold weather and the Multitronic". But I have not found anything in your site which specifies the obvious problem that exists with this otherwise excellent gearbox.
My car car has just turned 100,000 miles since October 2001 and tomorrow it is going back to the Audi agent hopefully to receive another "fix" to the gearbox....this will be its fourth.
From memory the first gearbox was replaced completely after around 30,000 miles, and subsequently it has had at least two input shafts fitted at approx 20,000 mile intervals.
The symptoms are always the same - reluctance to engage drive in the morning, high revs needed to move off, juddering under load and acceleration.
I was told at first (in 2004) that this was a problem that they were unaware of, but from other web-sites I have seen that it is widely understood and there are a variety of fixes offered. One of these involves the fitting of a seven plate clutch instead of the six plate version, another involves replacement of input shaft.
Clearly there was a problem with this gearbox, especially when fitted to the high torque diesel engines...but does anybody know if it has been completely sorted now ??
I am considering another A6 Avant TDI with a Multitronic box....but will it work ??

My 04 Audi with Multitronic has had a failure and Audi wants £4500 to replace it. Failed in the first 40k miles but outside of warranty.

Lots of others have had similar experiences with such early failures.

Perhaps the new ones are better?

My common advice is:

(1) Make sure you get a 7 plate clutch - the 5 plate ones are the cause of the juttering (had mine changed under warranty)

(2) Have your gearbox oil changed every 40k miles -- it's in the service book, but often gets forgotten. Someone else recommended changing it every 20k which i may start doing as these gearboxes seem notorious for failures

(3) If your PRNDS light is flashing, it may just be the switch on the transmission which costs £1000 instead of £4500 for a whole new gearbox. Specialist multitronic garages will be cheaper than main audi dealers but make sure you go to a specialist as multitronics are very complex...

I don't know if the new ones are better, but I'm not sure it's worth the risk...

Just had mine fixed for exactly the same symptoms, £1100 on a Gearbox ECU, result is perfect, no juddering, or time delay on pull away, allthough this box is designed to be slow on pull away when its cold, makes sence really

By switch on the transmission are you referring to the gearbox ECU, if the PRND light is flashing on the dash and the car does not move when selecting gears?

Huge thread in the Audi section of Pistonheads. An Audi technician posts on there and he wouldn't touch one with a bargepole.

Have you tried posting your question here www.vwaudiforum.co.uk.

I had an A6 1.9pd with a multitronic box - I loved it - but I think I was lucky to have passed the car on before any problems appeared. Shame really, the MT box really suited the diesel characteristics in my view. Sorry I can't add much except good luck!
