Audi 80 - Ted
Hi, I recently bought an Audi 80 Sport (2.0 16v) whichshortly afterwards developed an oil leak. My local garage decided that I should have the engine jet washed to locate exactly where the oil was coming from - big mistake!!! Ever since then when the car starts up in the morining and the choke is on it is fime, however, if after it has heated up and you swithch the engine off and restart it the engine misfire and splutters abusively for a couple of minutes before it settles down. The garage that did the jet wash couldn't find the leak, an independant specialist said it was the sump gasket my dad found it was the oil pressure switch seal. Now I am left with a car that runs erratically when jsut heated and then settles dwn.

Is there any fellow HJ reader who may be able to help??

I've heard that the brain, therm problem but no one can tell me for sure what it is.

Thanks.

Ted,

One thing to look at is the spark plug leads - they go through the cam cover in between the inlet manifold branches down into the engine. Normally the plug lead rubber seals against the cam cover, but under high pressure the water can be forced past these seals and will intermittently short the leads until the water flashes into steam. Try taking these out and dry out thoroughly.

Otherwise your symptoms sound like water in the electrics - the coil and low voltage unit sit at the back of the engine bay and can suffer from the wet. Other items that can get wet are connectors - located around the engine and usually under rubber sleeves - and don't forget the distributor.

Good luck!

El Dingo (Martin).
