I've been screwed, absolutely hung, drawn and quartered and wallet blitzed by
a well known motor manufacturer in the purchase of parts for my vehicle.

Their cost for a 7cm long bit of 45mm diam hose and two hose clamps (jubilee clips) a staggering £86.78. (Hose £66.58, clamps x 2 £20.22.. (£86.80) I needed two but only ordered one and had to have a set as I couldn't compare on the vehicle.

On getting the parts I shopped around various factors and came up with a 45mm diam U bend hose that I can get two 7cm parts from at £17.40 and their clamps were £1 each. (£19.40).

A rip off of £67.40.

I'm fuming at this rip off and want scalps. Other than the vehicle Manufacturer which will be like banging ones head against the wall who else can I lodge a complaint with? Officer of Fair Trading and SMMT do not appear to geared up to deal with such matters.

Surely a baN IS SANe on this practice of overcharging.

DVD Have you not enjoyed the luxurious surroundings of the franchise premises? They do have to be paid for and this week it is obviously your turn to cough up:-)

Whoops - I suggest doing this first next time.

I've read of people who book a holiday then spend the next 6 months seeing if they could have bought it for less!

Its the way things are I'm afraid. Its not just Nissan. I have given up being amazed at some parts prices. It can be difficult to predict as well - sometimes a part you thing will be expensive is cheaper than expected, sometimes a simple small part will be extortionately expensive.
The makers will claim that it is not the part that you are paying for, its making it available to you (i.e. the infrastructure and logistics of parts supply). Parts prices in the UK are very very high in general - as I have posted before, for low-weight high-value parts it can work out cheaper to contact a dealer overseas and have the part shipped over. E.g. Mitsubishi parts in AUS/NZ are typically 50% of UK prices.. Nissan 02 sensor is about 1/3 of UK price in the USA.

DVD, I'm curious as to why you paid up for these parts when told the price or did you send a blank cheque with your order?
Been mugged and GBH of the wallet. - adverse camber
The issue is that on the whole when you need a part, you need it now, not in 2 weeks and often if the car is off the road you dont have the chance to treck round different parts places.

A distress purchase in more ways than one.

"A fool and his money are soon parted" Does that help? :-)

Don't think there's anything to stop dealers charging what they like, you don't HAVE to pay it. However I agree that the prices of "little" parts is astonishing - when I was 17 I bought a tub of wheel bearing grease which, 20 years later, is still 95% full. It cost about £3. So why do main dealers charge £5 for a tiny blob of grease when they buy it in 20 litre drums?

Don't get me started on sump washers, I think the ones for our Passat were made by Fabergé if the price is anything to go by!

In short, I feel your pain

They wanted to charge me nearly 80 quid for a caliper seal kit.
That is for ONE SINGLE caliper and contains 8 rubber rings. (or whatever synthetic material they are made of).
Been mugged and GBH of the wallet. - rogue-trooper
know how you feel - I got raped by Mitsubishi the other day for the rear plastic "glass" covers for the indicators and brakes. SWMBO was told about £150 or so but it came to £360 + VAT for the part fitted.

Having said that I am not sure what is worse. My example or DVD paying £10 for a jubille clip!!! LOL.

On the back of that I will NEVER be buying a Mitsubishi again. shame that they have to rip their clients off.

Write to them and let them know.

Mitsi ARE very dear. However many other VM's are not much different. At one time Ford were very reasonable on parts, but even they will now sting you from time to time.. I think with so much emphasis on new car prices the makers are looking for more profit from parts and service.
Been mugged and GBH of the wallet. - Dwight Van Driver
What got my goat was that I couldn't take the old part off to compare otherwise VOR
at bad time of year and with my three thumbs doubtful I would get the other back on in a couple of days. I need time

I appreciate having to pay for parts but 'jazzus' not at that price. Their loss for what to me is a fine vehicle when it comes to renewal - no way - bye bye.

One would have thought a high price complaint dept would have existed somewhere but there again this is Britain at its greedy best.

Guess its out to High Street tonight and a howl with battered Guitar and cap on the floor. Be generous if anyone sees me......

I know, it's outrageous! Subaru charged me 88p plus vat for a sump plug washer at the last service! On top of £5.56 plus vat for an oil filter. How do they get away with it? ;-)

Cars are so relatively cheap these days they are almost loss-leaders for the finance, servicing and parts business they generate.

I once had to pay Peugeot £140 for a 1" bore coolant hose for a 405. I thought that was daylight robbery until I heard your tale DVD.
At least mine was 4 feet long, part metal and part rubber and had pre-formed bendy bits in it.
Been mugged and GBH of the wallet. - 659FBE
I nearly got caught that way by PSA with their triffid-like hoses. Being an ex-Northerner, I went to B&Q and purchased the required "Yorkshire" plumbing fittings to re-create in metal the triumph of PSA's design department. The straight rubber bits cut from the original triffid + a few worm drive hose clips sorted the job out.

Plumbing always was lucrative.

I read the above with shock and horror! I have obviously been lucky. A few months ago I bought a hi level brake light for my 307 and it came complete with small wiring harness, the bulb holders and red lens, complete with 5 bulbs, and the windscreen washer pipe and nozzle and change out of £10. I couldn't believe it and, to be honest, neither could the man on the parts counter!
Been mugged and GBH of the wallet. - Group B
Good one 659! I never thought to do that but it was years ago; it was 'just another bill' for that car. Would have needed a pipe bender to get it accurate but could probably have bodged it.

They are not available at any price for our Fords. You have to buy a new sump plug.
IIRC they are about £3.50

Wait till you have to buy an intercooler. they used to be about £1500!! hope they are cheaper now. At least they don't go wrong often so thats why they have to make there money up.

"Cost plus" exists in a few specialist industries but the rest of the world works on free market economics. From a business point of view, a correct price is the highest possible selling price.

Competition is the key to reducing prices but it won't happen while the general public is content with the concept of "list price" - Resale Price Maintenance was outlawed many years ago, but it's alive and well in reality.

£570.49 for a new throttle body (including fitting) for an 03 reg 1.4 16V Skoda Fabia on Monday.

I have the old part and will be wrapping it up and presenting it to Mrs P E for Christmas, along with some roller skates.

Sorry not possible Skoda's do not go wrong only the waste of money VW equivalent.

You will do 200 lines and present them in the morning.

Seriously this is where the makers have us by the short and curlies for just this sort of part.

Just out of interest for some of these type of parts i wonder if the chaps that repair ecu's (some good some not so) can refurb?

I gave up attempting to buy parts from Nissan unless completely unavoidable - they attempted to charge me £9 for a headlight connector (£1.50 at your local generic parts shop) and just under a ton for a dim/dip unit, which I chose to obtain in perfect working order from a local scrappy for a tenner. The kick in the teeth is complete when you open it up and see how little there actually is inside - I'd be amazed if it cost a tenner to make!

The worst charge would have been almost £600 for a new ECU a couple of years back. Fortunately a local ECU recon expert had one to hand for £90..
Been mugged and GBH of the wallet. - P E
Indeed, these prices are a kick in the teeth.

DVD, rest assured I will not be buying a Nissan for my next car due to the cost of parts, or for that matter a Mitsubishi for the same reasons. I would not have realised these costs had it not been pointed out on this website.

The Profesionals is on itv4 now. Ford Capris being thrown about. Class.

if you have to use a dealer to source parts then make it a last resort

thats my tip of the year
Been mugged and GBH of the wallet. - Aprilia
BB

For the parts you can also source elsewhere the dealer will not be too dear. For the 'dealer only' parts they will skin you.

Yes, Nissan and Mitsi parts are expensive, but then so are parts for a whole lot of other brands...
Been mugged and GBH of the wallet. - P E
Yes, such as Skoda for example.

About 30 years ago I used to work for an Aeroquip hydraulic hose dealer. We use to repair power steering hoses by cutting out the rubber parts, sweating on an adaptor onto the metal pipe sections and then refitting new rubber hose with reusable fittings. We did a good trade with that. The end result was better than new. Same with the rubber hoses that were crimped onto the hydrolastic suspension pots on Austin 1800s. Even with labour costs our repair came out miles cheaper than the OEM spares.

Ouch! I remember Volvo quoting me the best part of £200 to replace a master cylinder on a 240. I got one for about £20 from Swedish and German autoparts and a pupil of mine who was a mechanic put it in for a free lesson.

I remeber an Audi A4 1.9TDI Avant that we owned in 2003. The performance slowly deteriorated to the point that it would not rev above 3000 rpm, and take a while to get to that!!

The local garage had a look and diagnosed a faulty mass air flow meter, big bucks I thought! And I was right at £200!!

Had to replace it again earlier this year, bought the mass air flow meter from GSF for £60 ish and fitted it myself in 15 mins. Do it yourself if you can...........

Power Sounder for a Corsa £41 plus VAT - Bit much for a fiver's worth of board and components but can't source other than Vauxhall.

In the process of changing it lost a pin from the wheel arch liner and as I was going in to Vauxhall for that also got a clip for the boot carpet and two wheel nut covers (2 lost).

the first part was in stock, boot carpet clip was distribution centre order, wheel nut covers were factory order, took him 10 minutes to locate the parts on the computer system.

I was expecting £10 or so - actual cost around £1.40 for the lot and they let me take the only bit they had in stock away on the understanding that I would pay when the other bits arrived.
