"On getting the parts I shopped around various factors"
Whoops - I suggest doing this first next time.
I've read of people who book a holiday then spend the next 6 months seeing if they could have bought it for less!

Its the way things are I'm afraid. Its not just Nissan. I have given up being amazed at some parts prices. It can be difficult to predict as well - sometimes a part you thing will be expensive is cheaper than expected, sometimes a simple small part will be extortionately expensive.
The makers will claim that it is not the part that you are paying for, its making it available to you (i.e. the infrastructure and logistics of parts supply). Parts prices in the UK are very very high in general - as I have posted before, for low-weight high-value parts it can work out cheaper to contact a dealer overseas and have the part shipped over. E.g. Mitsubishi parts in AUS/NZ are typically 50% of UK prices.. Nissan 02 sensor is about 1/3 of UK price in the USA.

DVD, I'm curious as to why you paid up for these parts when told the price or did you send a blank cheque with your order?
|
The issue is that on the whole when you need a part, you need it now, not in 2 weeks and often if the car is off the road you dont have the chance to treck round different parts places.
A distress purchase in more ways than one.

"A fool and his money are soon parted" Does that help? :-)
Don't think there's anything to stop dealers charging what they like, you don't HAVE to pay it. However I agree that the prices of "little" parts is astonishing - when I was 17 I bought a tub of wheel bearing grease which, 20 years later, is still 95% full. It cost about £3. So why do main dealers charge £5 for a tiny blob of grease when they buy it in 20 litre drums?
Don't get me started on sump washers, I think the ones for our Passat were made by Fabergé if the price is anything to go by!
In short, I feel your pain

They wanted to charge me nearly 80 quid for a caliper seal kit.
That is for ONE SINGLE caliper and contains 8 rubber rings. (or whatever synthetic material they are made of).
|
know how you feel - I got raped by Mitsubishi the other day for the rear plastic "glass" covers for the indicators and brakes. SWMBO was told about £150 or so but it came to £360 + VAT for the part fitted.
Having said that I am not sure what is worse. My example or DVD paying £10 for a jubille clip!!! LOL.
On the back of that I will NEVER be buying a Mitsubishi again. shame that they have to rip their clients off.

Write to them and let them know.
Mitsi ARE very dear. However many other VM's are not much different. At one time Ford were very reasonable on parts, but even they will now sting you from time to time.. I think with so much emphasis on new car prices the makers are looking for more profit from parts and service.
|
What got my goat was that I couldn't take the old part off to compare otherwise VOR
at bad time of year and with my three thumbs doubtful I would get the other back on in a couple of days. I need time
I appreciate having to pay for parts but 'jazzus' not at that price. Their loss for what to me is a fine vehicle when it comes to renewal - no way - bye bye.
One would have thought a high price complaint dept would have existed somewhere but there again this is Britain at its greedy best.
Guess its out to High Street tonight and a howl with battered Guitar and cap on the floor. Be generous if anyone sees me......

I know, it's outrageous! Subaru charged me 88p plus vat for a sump plug washer at the last service! On top of £5.56 plus vat for an oil filter. How do they get away with it? ;-)

'The car started as a toy for rich gents and then became a cheap copy of that. So woe betide us, sooner or later, if we don't cough up like the cheap copies of rich gents we are assumed to be.'

Cars are so relatively cheap these days they are almost loss-leaders for the finance, servicing and parts business they generate.

I once had to pay Peugeot £140 for a 1" bore coolant hose for a 405. I thought that was daylight robbery until I heard your tale DVD.
At least mine was 4 feet long, part metal and part rubber and had pre-formed bendy bits in it.
|
I nearly got caught that way by PSA with their triffid-like hoses. Being an ex-Northerner, I went to B&Q and purchased the required "Yorkshire" plumbing fittings to re-create in metal the triumph of PSA's design department. The straight rubber bits cut from the original triffid + a few worm drive hose clips sorted the job out.
Plumbing always was lucrative.
659.

I read the above with shock and horror! I have obviously been lucky. A few months ago I bought a hi level brake light for my 307 and it came complete with small wiring harness, the bulb holders and red lens, complete with 5 bulbs, and the windscreen washer pipe and nozzle and change out of £10. I couldn't believe it and, to be honest, neither could the man on the parts counter!
|
Good one 659! I never thought to do that but it was years ago; it was 'just another bill' for that car. Would have needed a pipe bender to get it accurate but could probably have bodged it.

They are not available at any price for our Fords. You have to buy a new sump plug.
IIRC they are about £3.50
