99 TDI - air con noise - mistified
MY 99 T Toledo TDi makes a loud engine speed clicking noise whenever the climate control is on. system has been re gassed, belt and tensioner replaced, alternator replaced to no effect. specialist air con man says probably the compressor but not certain. it works normally,just very noisy. any suggestions please.

Well I am a bit mistified as to why a specialist cant trace the noise. gauges on the system may well indicate a valve fault in the compressor unless the clutch is switching in & out but a stethoscope will find the noise in seconds

suggest get the air con man to check the front clutch of the compressor and examine the drive plate and securing nut(if it is still attached).The nut works loose and allows the friction plate to ride up and down on the splined pump shaft and wear it out.Also check the operation of the cooling fans;there may be something trapped in the blades causing a similar noise.hth

I'd go for the compressor clutch too. It's not unusual to find the whole assembly lying on the undertray when the rivets fail on the Zexel pumps. About £95 from VW - change it before it flies off and takes the rad out too.
