2.0 TD cambelt - LinuxGeek
I went to local Mazda dealer on Saturday to buy the cambelt for my Mazda 323 2.0TD and the chap in the parts department told me its £70+ incl. VAT. He was as shocked as I was when he told me the price. I confirmed with him if its just the cambelt or its the whole kit. He told me its just the cambelt. Would you guys pay such a price for a belt? Is there any other place which could sell good quality cam belt for this engine? I don't mind paying around £40 but to be honest £70+ for a cam belt is quite expensive I guess!

Go to any reputable factor.

Virtually all aftermarket cam belts available in this country are made by a small number of very specialist manufacturers.

These belts will either be the same as, or made to the same standard as those supplied by the franchised dealer. (But a lot cheaper)

I paid £70-something for a Gates/SKF kit for the Mondeo through the local factors, but in fairness this is a big kit with two belts, two tensioners and an idler pulley in the box.

The Fiesta kit (same make from same place) with the normal single belt and tensioner was about £40.

£70 for the belt alone sounds outrageously expensive. I would expect to pay no more than that for a complete kit even from a main dealer.

I agree with rebel by the way. A reputable factor will sell you something at least as good as the original equipment on the car. Gates make belts for most manufacturers.

Cheers

Thanks chaps, I'll take your advise and would contact my local motor factor and I'll see if they could get me a good quality cambelt. Would I be able to get them from my local Halfords?

I was charged £600 for a 54k (major) service and new cambelt on my 323TD by main dealer. It wasn't itemised so I can't tell how much the belt was. I balked at the total cost but take comfort from the fact that 30k of trouble-free motoring since makes it a safe investment for me as I intend to keep it for a few years to come.

The only disapointment are the rusting rear wheel arches (inside and out) qhich other 323 owners have complained about through HJ
