10th Generation Corolla - Not in the UK - WHY? - joenormal
I had 7 Toyota's over 25 years, (from starlet right through to Camry) so assume I know the brand a little.

The new Corolla is out in Europe, Eire, the US, RSA, Aus. All we get here is the Auris, that is NOT the corolla.

This is the corolla,

and

look on autotrader ie, its there, they are even going 2nd hand now.

Why oh why have Toyota UK let us down. I really like the car, and am ready to downsize, but just cant get one in the UK. Do I import?

Also the 6th generation Camry is out. Do we have it here. Do we heck. And to think that you can get a Hybrid new in the US for £14k. We are being ripped off here again, and the £ is so strong against the us $ .

$31k is £15k in the video. Where are we going wrong!

Thanks for reading

The Corolla in the video looks like an Auris with a boot. Sold in the USA presumably because hatchbacks aren't liked there. Also not convinced by the new Camry models though I liked the older ones. The hybrid version I tried never ran solely on electrical power for more than a couple of seconds. For me the big attraction with the Prius was gliding around silently just using the electric motor.

Auris is a Corolla in everything but name. A very disappointing car, not a large enough step from the previous generation. Luckily Kia saw the market gap for people such as my dad who's happily driving around in one of their well made cars after having two Corollas.

I had a Mk IV Camry, got it new, loaded with goodies. Was one of my best cars ever. The Mk V was a "boat" but the Mk VI is lovely. Saw many on a business trip to MA last month, so went to the dealer and got a brochure. It is a very good car for $28 k £14k.

The Auris, is a bit taller don't you think than the corolla. I see your point re hatch, and wonder in the UK how much we are pushed by the manufacturers. Many people get 4 door VWs, Fords, Audis, but why not Corolla. They are never promoted thus. Does the consumer follow the UK dealership trend, since dealers do not display 4 doors in smaller models?

Did your Dad get a Ceed, they look cool.

Yeah a Ceed, the SR special editions, which is really just a GS spec but saves many £'s. It's actually the only spec of any value, the current offer of a diesel for the same price as a petrol is a little bit of a con, you can't get the SR spec in a diesel, and therefore it costs £2550 at RRP more!

Great car, better built than the old Toyota Corolla, mpg is much better and it's engine more powerful too. Downsides so far are the dash underside and door plastic aren't wonderful, the key remote locking buttons seem to be aging quite quickly and they should improve the leather on the gear stick, apart from that perfect!

It's probably possible to import a car directly from Japan. You could even get a low mileage used demonstrator for a good price. A number of firms in UK specialise in this type of thing, but most of the cars imported are high performance models.

Auris, Camry - pah.

It's the absence of the Ractis that you should be lamenting.

Talking about non sales of the Camry.

Another missed opportunity. Toyo make some wonderful bigger diesels with stacks of easy torque so why have they never taken on the Germans at their own game and stuck a big (not that 2.2 its horrible till the revs are up) diesel in the camry with an estate option like they used to.

I sometimes wonder if they wanted camry out of the way as it undercut and was virtually as good as Lexus.

Agree with the OP missing corolla, the auris doesn't quite do it for me either.

Reckon Toyota thought that in some markets, i.e. the UK Focus and Golf buyers would never buy a Corrolla because its image was dull and boring albeit solid and dependable, they hoped that a new name would overcome such resistance with the Toyota brand providing the quality reassurance.

I'm not sure that Toyota are still providing the quality reassurance they once did.
I read so many threads of rattly Toyota's and if you look at their recall rate it is terrible at the moment. I think they are struggling to expand to meet demand and their cars are the worse for it.
It's not just non-Japanese either - my Corolla is made in Japan and it has loads of bits of trim coming off or feeling like it will drop off any minute.
I probably would never have another and would counsel anyone to think long & hard before the buy one.
I think they are where VW were - living off a historic reputation that is no longer the case.

I have had my 1.6 corolla for 4 years and 34000 miles,it has had no faults or rattles/sqeaks,it does 43 mpg on average, with 46 mpg quite often,it uses no oil.So I must recommend it,so many satisfied people neglect to praise their cars, whereas the unhappy are quick to list their problems.

Have you ensured it has been in for the recall on the towing eye mod - it will start making funning whinning noises (similar to me) if it has not. There are a couple of mods that apply to your model (I believe) that should get done during the annual service.
It may not have let you down but it is not totally fault free unfortunatley - Toyota's rarely are these days. Although they do tend to be good at recalling them when necessary.

There is something to be said for that, and the level of aftercare exemplified by such things as the unofficial extended warranty on oil-thirsty VVTis.

High level Toyota execs have also made public statements that quality must be improved. Considering that they are still in the top rankings of most reliability/satisfaction surveys that doesn't sound too bad. I don't think they are quite relying on former glories, they seem genuinely keen to get back there.

FWIW, after 14 months/22.5k miles, my Avensis feels pretty much as it did on day one. Nothing rattling, nothing broken, no faults. Sailed through two services with no problems (as it should!).
