Belt or chain drive ? - 02skn
Looking at a number of used BMW 5 series diesels (530 and 535d). Can any backroomers tell me if the engines have a timing belt or are they chain driven. A lot of the cars we have looked at seem to have around 60k on the clock. I would not like to buy and then get hit with a big bill for a timing belt change.

Its chain on these - two chains in fact. Then one cam is driven by the top chain and the other is geared off it.

Thanks Aprilla. I take it chains only get changed if they are rattling/worn but not at any set interval.

Should last the life of the engine if the car is serviced. By the time they need changing it would not be economically viable to do so!
