Mazda Xedos 9 (1994 - 1999) - Stiff auto gear change

Stiff auto gear change - al2838
Is anyone aware of the possible cause of the auto selector getting stiff i.e from drive to reverse. The hotter the engine the stiffer it gets. I don't believe it is the cable as it can be seen to move quite freely until the slack is taken up.
