Have a look at this thread below - may help. I found some older car tests on the AA website that provided this data - PU

My wifes 2002 1.6 vtec SE regularly returns 37-38mpg in day to day driving with a lot of start stopping and short runs while on a recent long drive from Belfast to Leicester (via Cairnryan with P&O!), it returned over 45mpg predominantly at motorway speeds and with the car nearly fully loaded. Can't comment on the diesel I'm afraid but would imagine it would give an additional 10mpg or so over the petrol. FWIW, my wife's car has been totally reliable over the 3 years that we've had it and is relatively cheap to service - a service and mot prep (not the mot itself though) cost £120 at a main Honda dealer last week which I thought was very reasonable.
