fiesta 1.4 16v zetec " loud ticking " - r3d_dwarf
i own a 1997 p reg fiesta 1400cc zetec 16v ghia x and when the engine starts to warm up its making a loud ticking sound from the engine department, the ticking sound increases and decreases depending on the throttle but there is no smoke, oil loss ect but i hear if you use the wrong oil it can damage the engine? its done 109k miles any thing wrong/damage done or is it a case of a sticky valve/tappet
thanks

i have a friend who put some 'castrol for old engines' into his ford and it packed up, AA man said get the oil changed to the corrrect spec- that cured it.
have you changed the oil ?, has it been maintained properly , if not then possible worn top bits.
But how long will a 1.4 last?

i havent changed the oil, and i dont think its been done recently either, i have heard that unless you use the correct grade then it can damage it but it goes ok drives ok just this annoying ticking sound.

just seen this on hon. johns car by car breakdown...
Zetec S 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 engines may have been filled with wrong oil (MUST be 5W-30). Wrong oil leads to sticking valves, blocked arteries and oil starvation problems. Check for high oil consumption, smoky exhaust on 1.4/1.6 Zetec S from wrong oil having been used.

sounds right but no smokey engine tho.

First port of call - drop the oil & filter yourself and put a decent 5W30 semi-synth in (if not, Ford rapid fit shouldn't charge too much). If noise persists take it to independent garage for diagnosis. If any damage is being caused, the longer you leave the noise the worse the damage will be.

Agree about the oil.

Also check: this could be an exhaust manifold leak : a small leak often gives the same symptons. Test by feeling carefully for exhaust gas escape...preferably when the manifolds and engine are cold.. as it's safer.

Our Fiesta with this engine was still fit as a fiddle when sold at 97k. Top end was absolutely silent, and oil consumption negligible. Should be good for 150k if properly maintained.

I agree, an oil and filter change is a good first step. Should be done anyway if you have no idea of the history. These engines need regular oil changes with the correct 5W/30 oil to remain healthy, and go downhill very quickly if neglected.

Ford's own Formula-E oil is good stuff, and available from £17 a can depending on where you buy it from. Even main dealers only charge about £23, from memory.

Cheers

just an update, i replaced the oil as per recomended 5w-30 oil, but still tapping, been told its a "sticking" or "seized" tappet or tappets, i assume this was done as the wrong oil was put in.
anyway while thats being done i was told that the cam belt might as well be replaced as well as the tentioners.
quoted between 200 to 250 tho no more than 250 all in.
good quote or no?
thanks

It depends on where you live. I got quoted £190 for a cambelt change on my 1.25 Zetec Fiesta. I ended up selling that, also with 97k on the clock, instead of getting it done. By the way, I did around 25,000 miles on 10w/40 supermarket oil in my 1.25. I never had any problems at all. The engine was still running perfectly when I sold it. Perhaps I was lucky.

These engines don't have hydraulic tappets. They're solid lifters with shims.

The hydraulic tappets on the early Mondeo/Escort engines used to stick when the wrong oil was used, but that can't happen on these smaller Zetecs.

I get a loud 'ticking' on my '03 1.5 Almera if I floor it at 3-6K RPM and above. I assume it's a pulsing from the air intake.
Any comments?

These engines don't have hydraulic tappets. They're solid lifters with shims.

i had a mobile mechanic come round and this is what he said, " its either a seized or lazy tappett or tappetts but if i am going to do the job i suggest doing the cam belt kit as i need to take top part of engine off" all for 200 to 250 max pounds

so a second opinion from another mechanic might be in order then.

i wrote a thread about a fortnight ago regarding my "ticking" engine.
i took it to a mechanic and he replaced the hydrolic shims checked the cam that was in good order put it together again but still with the same problem.
mechanic said " no idea"

so basicaly unless the head gets taken off again with more expence and with a garage only guessing what the fault is, can the fault be diagnosed by someone who is more compentant then the half wits im talking to?? who proberbly reading off a haynes manual as they work.

engine starts first time no smoke, slight ticking but when more warmed up/hot seems to tick louder and it tends to miss a beat or two ( ?? )

thanks any useful hints might save me a few bob or two.

Moved into the original thread so that new readers can digest the whole story - PU

oh and forsgot to say, tends to wobble/vibrate if i go over 4k rpm (??) the car shakes but not through the wheels but only if im driving, if i free wheel it doesnt do it.
thanks again/
