Renault 5(1.4)-intermittent problem - Richard Naylor
I have an intermittent problem with my 1996 Renault 5, 1.4 (C3J engine with
Electronic Ignition). When the car returns to idle the car nearly stalls, then
the revs pickup automatically and everything is fine. This only occurs when the
engine has been run for a few miles. The car has covered 35,000 miles and is
fully serviced.

Can anybody offer any suggestions as to what may be causing this problem ?

Thanks

Richard Naylor

Richard,
I bet Andrew and Adam (Tune-up Ltd) will answer this soon.
It amazes me just how many mid-life idle/low speed problems appear with ECU/Cat petrol cars of all makes. I now stick to pre '96 Turbo Diesels (to avoid excess electronics even fitted to many later diesels) for the ultimate combination of economy, overall performance and maintenance ease.
Sorry it doesn't help with the Renault!

Sorry boys, but there is no quick fix for this one !!
Could be any one of so many things, or a combination. First stop would be to check for induction air leaks, integrity of all vacuum pipes (especially that to the MAP sensor), and signals from the trottle position sensor and road speed sensor. Without seeing the system I am not sure if it has an idle speed air valve or a throttle stepper motor, but whichever it is would be another possibility. Important to make sure that the throttle housing / butterfly are clean, and also the idle speed air valve if that is what it has. After that lot it could be anything from an intermittent wiring fault to the ECM itself, unless anyone else has a history & cure for a similar fault.
Over to you JS !!

Thanks for the confidence Adam!

Like you I'm not familiar with this car, but my first thought too was idle speed control problems - blocked or faulty idle speed control valve or throttle stepper problems or the other items you've suggested. If it hasn't idle speed control I wondered if the idle speed is a bit too low, as that can sometimes cause a stall when closing the throttle. Another possibility is a faulty overun fuel shut off perhaps? I reckon it needs a specialist to look at it - how about Tune-up Ltd???

Cheers

I/we would be happy to take a look at it, but we don't know where Richard lives. I am based in Worthing, and Andrew in Crawley, both West Sussex.
To locate my colleagues in South East England visit 'www.uktuneup.co.uk'
but for other operators nationally look in Yellow Pages under 'Car Engine Tuning'.
