You really need a special tool with four lugs on it. However, on an older car this is unlikely to shift the existing ball joint - it's only really useful for putting the new one back in. You might be able to get it off on the car, but once the hub is disconnected from the wishbone, there's nothing to push against. Easiest way is to get the hub off the car and into the vice, make sure you remove the locking tab from the washer, heat the hub to soften the locktite and drive the joint round with a hammer and chisel.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

You can remove the ball joint with a hammer and cold chisel, but this method can/will induse lots of blood sweat and tears. The special tool only costs about £8.00 www.justoffbase.co.uk/Tool-Shop/Suspension-Ball-Jo...s
