Rover 600 Diesel Turbocharger problem?? - jeffersgb
I have a 1998 Rover 600 2 litre turbo diesel which has done 62000 miles.Lately, when I'm on a long run, the engine management warning light has been coming on but goes out when I take my foot off the accelerator pedal.I found that lifting my foot off the pedal for a second will turn off the light so I do it immediately the light comes on.Usually this works first time but sometimes I have to repeat it a few times.
At the same time the engine can become noisier with a sound similar to noisy tappets and there is a slight loss of power which is more noticeable if I'm in a lower gear, say driving up a hill.Dropping down a gear or two sometime helps to turn off the warning light and as soon as the light is out the engine gets back to normal with no further problems for perhaps 50 miles or more. Could this be the turbocharger on the way out?

It needs a good coat of looking at the tappet like noise is worrying as this could and I repeat could be the big ends starting to rattle you would hear this more when under load. The fact the engine sometimes returns to normal perhaps is a good sign and is in fact a the turbo on its way out but you need to have it diagnosed quickly before you do any severe damage.

I could be wrong but sounds like oil pressure problems,I would get the oil pressure checked as you may have pump problems, when was oil/filter last changed?

The oil was changed about 11mths ago using Castrol GTD Magnatec oil and the car has done less than 5000 miles in that time. It is due to be changed shortly. The oil warning light does occasionally stay on for seconds when starting up.

Oil light taking a few secs to go off is not necessarily a problem and with some engines is normal.

If the noise you hear is related to the fault and illumination of the warning light it is most likely just the combustion of fuel occuring slightly more noisely than it should as a result of a fueling (quantity or timing) or turbo fault (excessive boost pressure possibly).

You could try visiting a diesel specialist in your local area from the yellow pages or search for a Bosch agent and hope the one you chose is trustworthy

Thanks for all of your replies.
I omitted to mention that I had a new Camshaft timing belt with new tensioners and Injection Pump timing belt fitted a few weeks ago. I don't know whether this might have anything to do with it as it is only since I had this work done that I've had the problem.

If the timing is over advanced, this will increase "diesel knock".

Have your timing rechecked, especially at the pump end, if you have got the pump timing slightly out willcause running problems.

Thanks to you all for your replies. I have booked the car into my local garage for a diagnostic check which hopefully will reveal the problem.
