16v VAG engine. - Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up Ltd.)
Inspected an Audi 1.8 16v for a friend over the weekend. 94k with full VAGSH.
All ok except that the chain linking the cams I feel is noisy. What is involved with replacing this item. I plan to do it when I give it a full service and all fluid change.

Andrew,

I'm confused - where are the other 26 replies???

(Martyn - have you moderated them?)

BTW, is the chain slack? In good condition, this chain should be nice and 'tight' with very little slack. It certainly doesn't make a *noise* apart from what you might expect (and I am sure that you know what to expect...).

If you do replace it, you need (maybe) a manifold split-joint gasket (if the manifold splits, if not a manifold gasket), a cam cover gasket (preferably IMHO a VAG original), a camshaft seal, the chain, and (maybe) a new cam belt and tensioner. Cam cap stud torques vary on different VAG 16V engines - be wary!

However, I might have forgotten something.... (E&OE as they say).

Martin.
