I've got a Primera IV outside with this gizmo. You simply have to wipe the lens clean fairly frequently. Unfortunately the rear view picture is in black and while and doesn't digitally photograph, otherwise I'd have included it in the forthcoming road test. Haven't worked up the nerve to reverse solely using the tv screen. The camera looks down at a 45 degree angle so you can't see very far behind.

A TV test, I think it was Fifth Gear, mentions the tester's love of this gizmo (about 84 times I think) and seemed to imply that it was usable when driving ahead, HJ, is this correct ?

Yes it is, if you select reverse while driving forwards. Expensive, though. And you can only do it once at a time.

Rather than as a neat gizmo on cars this sounds the perfect answer for a clear unrestricted rear view for HGV's and box vans etc, just use it to replace the rear-view mirror.
It has been one of my gripes for several years that my company decided that all our vans should have solid rear doors rather than those with windows, this made the rear-view mirror totally useless. As a point we dressed a guy up in a high visibility jacket and got him to walk in a straight line behind an Escort van, no matter how we set the mirrors he was virtually invisible in a cone stretching back 22m. The company took the view that improved security took precedence over the rear view despite the fact that reversing in any area where a lot of people are walking about is now a nightmare of a lottery. It's only a question of time before some kiddy gets reversed over and whether it's my fault or not I won't feel good about it. Therefore I think this could be a real safety bonus if it can be used in the right places.

Due to HSE pressure, CCTV has been a standard fitment on wheeled loading shovels & refuse vehicle for several years, and has improved from grainy black and white to quite good colour. Prices have dropped enormously.
Their use will soon be extended to other commercial vehicles

It's the forward vision on refuse vehicles which needs to be improved to judge from an incident locally last week where one ran over a cyclist in good visibility in the middle of the afternoon!
