Mondeo tinkling / clinking noise - matt79
Hi all,
My Mondeo mk3 1.8 zetec (51 plate, 74k miles) is driving me mad with a tinkling / clinking noise coming from the engine. The noise is sometimes heard for a second when starting the engine, and also when pulling away or changing up a gear, most noticable in 1st & 2nd gears between 1000 - 2000 revs. It doesnt seem to make the noise when slowing down, only on acceleration.
To me it it sounds like something is loose, or a clutch problem?
Any help or advice appreciated.
Thanks
Matt

years ago I would have said this was 'pinking', low fuel octane or too adavanced ignition. But with such clever cars now I though they adjusted for this with the ECU.
Also it could have been the 'little ends' wearing- but they outlive the car now- I think.
That all I can think of

Are you sure it is coming from the engine? When the insides of the cat break up they make a clinking sound...........

Heatshield perhaps - had this on one of the office hacks...

Thanks for the advice guys. Is there anything I can do or look for to check if its the cat breaking up?

All 4 pot Mundanos pink at low revs/high load. More revs. How does it sound at 6k as you make good progress?

I have a similar problem. My 2001 1.8 Duratec makes a faint 'tappety clattering' on tickover. At traffic lights the car shakes a little unless I hold the revs up to just over 1000. Any ideas anyone?

A Mondeo trait I fear. Go to the Mondeo Owners club where it has been debated for years!

slight correction, unless "gomto" is another word I've never heard of - which I accept is possible after the pean fiasco !- PU

i cured mine by only using shell petrol and yes it was a phenominminion called pinking or pre detenation as older people remember it as (calling milky joe ;-) ),unfortunately you cant spin the dizzy on a mondy to cure it like you could in a cortina .....mate

Does sound like 'pinking' or pre-ignition.
Pinking occurs when the engine is momentarily under load and the mixture pre-ignites prior to the main spark. When the two flame fonts collide in the cylinder the tinkling noise is produced.
Modern cars, as someone else has said, have various methods for usually eliminating this by using engine knock sensors and timing maps, but any defficencies in any of these systems could still result in pinking.
I know its bring, but I would get the fault codes scanned.

Hi All
Thanks for the advice. I have refilled the tank with 98 ron petrol & also added a fuel system cleaner, but this has had no effect. I have recently been driving around with the windows down & it does sound more like a 'metal on metal' rattle, like somethings loose? It also appears to be an intermittant problem, & it only happens when the car is under load, & not when rev'd at standstill.

Matt, I've only just found this thread... I have EXACTLY the same problem and it is NOT pinking - have you got to the bottom of it yet? It does sound like metal on metal and the earlier heatshield comment could be valid... Please let me know if you have solved the issue and if so how...
Cheers, John

Sounds as though the butterflies in the inlet manifold may be coming loose. i would get checked soon if i were you otherwise you could be looking at a new engine if one of the butterflies decides to make its way into the engine.
