It should be OK on a HD version too, they're nothing more than a set of POIs. Install them as described and then enable the POI in TomTom. It should then warn you when you're near an inconsistency or if you set "warn if POI on route" it should tell you when the route calculated will have a problem.
Would always recommend taking a backup of the maps folder/tomtom folder before playing with stuff like this though

So I guess it won't work on the hard disc versions will it ?
It should be doable by loading it into the Maps Folder on the hard disc via your USB connector.
