New Clutch..... where is best place to get one fix - Tom Stoddart-Scott
Dear All

Need a new clutch on my 1990 Subaru Justy and I was wondering where the best place is to get it done. I tend to do all the servicing my self and therefore the main dealer is not my first port of call as it is likely to be expensive, however it may be sensible.

I went into my local Mr Clutch who quoted me £270 all in. This seemed reasonable with a two year 20,000 mile warranty are they any good. My old Polo cost me £190 to have a VW part put in by a local specialist and as it is a Subaru I didn't think the extra £80 out of the way.

Would the parts used by Mr Clutch be as good or should I be using Subaru approved parts?

Does anybody have any experience of Mr Clutch they seemed very friendly and helpful.

I should finally commend this website it is great ta HJ hope Bali was good! and all other regular contributors etc.

Finally a message for Adam Going at Tune up: seemed to have solved the smoking problem with Duckhams 10w40 semi synthetic just occasionally does it which leaves me to believe it is valve stem wear but not using any petrol and is cheaper just to top up with oil until the autumn!

Cheers Tom

Get a quote from a few Suburu dealers, Tom.

I couldn't be bothered to do my Cambelt on my Rover. (Yes, I know, a simple procedure I should have done myself).

However after a phone round of the local garages and Kwik Fit etc. I called the local Rover dealer.

He quoted me the Rover price, then told me what he'd actually do it for,

Much less and the cheapest by far!

Main dealers are suprisingly flexible in price.

Tom,
This Duckhams stuff seems to be the business if it means you are now "not using any petrol". Ultimate economy !!!
Seriously, it would seem to be a valve stem seal problem, but not to much to worry about as yet.
Re. the clutch: Dave is right. Do check out a couple of dealers for a reference figure, but I doubt you will beat Mr Clutch by much on price. My local branch is allways busy, I personally haven't heard anything but good about them, and most of the local traders I do occasional jobs for use them, so they can't be bad. I guess, however, like any franchised business there is an element of quality variance from branch to branch, although of course the franchisor will assure you that standards are the same at all outlets. If you found them helpful and friendly you are half way there !
Regards, Adam

When I say no petrol I should have said much less petrol 40 mpg compared with 25-30!

Whoever you use, make sure they look at other things while they are about it - eg condition of the release lever and bearing and oils seals. From experience it is annoying and expensive to have some other small thing go soon after a clutch change, when it could have been spotted.

The other thing to check is the source of the parts used. Are they OE parts or from a reputable/known source; is the pressure plate new or reconditioned etc.

Came home early from Bali. But I can tell everyone not to be scared of driving there. I had a couple of Ssangyong Jimnys (2WD high-top versions of the old Suzuki Jimny). Terrible vehicles, but driving in Bali traffic is actually quite good fun if you keep your wits about you, use your mirrors and drive decisively.
