New Tyres for My S80 - Paul Robinson
Time for a new set (215/55 ZR16), priority is as quiet as possible and good wear potential. Current fit Michelin Pilots have been very good, is there something else I should consider?

I spent forever searching for a definitive answer to quiet tyres, without success. Magic Circles [or Black circles] is probably the best site for research though, and give good advice.
I ended up with Bridestone Turanza ER30s, now ER300s. I've no complaints.

The much-reviled Pirelli P6000 (205/55 16 91W) was OE on my S60. The leasing company when it was my company motor had those replaced with Michelin Primacy; now it's my car and it's finally back on four P6000s, which are cheaper by about a third (round here anyway).

Others here will tell you otherwise - SjB highly recommends the Goodyear F1 somethings he has on his V70 - but for me, between the Primacy and the P6000, the only difference I can detect is the price.

Indeed he does, as a Forum Search will reveal the detail of.

A massive improvement on the horrid P6000s the car came shod with, including of relevance here to be quieter and (to my amazement) longer lasting. I make the latter comment because even with pretty well the same driving regime throughout the four years from new that I've owned the car, the F1s are outliving the P6000s despite the former's extra grip and the car now having 258bhp/444NM instead of 200bhp/285NM, and much of it easily available over a wide band.

Paul. If cost is impotant., Check out Nokian Tyres. My local tyre specialist recommended them to me. I was a bit sceptical, not a known brand. I had them fitted and having replaced Michelins cannot tell the difference. They are very good value particularly with a larger tyre sizes on executive cars. For me Job done.

Paul,
What tyres have you fitted and what was the decisive factor ?

Actually, believe it or not, you do know the Nokian brand, just not as a tyre manufacturer, I'm sure it was Nokian that spawned the creation of Nokia! (yep, as in mobiles)

Maybe I'm wrong about it being Nokian that later went on to produce mobiles, but I'm absoloutely certain that Nokia started out manufacturing tyres and made the cross industry switch into mobile phone manufacturing many years later.

Paul, i have michelin 225/55/17 and they are very quiet. Had same size tyres on my previous car but Dunlop, quite noisy. When it comes to replacement i think i will stick with mitchelin. When you consider the time spent in the car, a lot of peace and quiet is worth something. Concrete.

Glad I checked my facts before slapping in a Smart alec reply to the effect that Nokia started out as a paper mill - according to nokia.com, the present Nokia company was formed from a merger between the paper company and the Finnish Rubber Factory and took the name of the town they were based in. Not sure if there's any link now to the phone company but here it is in Nokian's words.

History:
Nokian Tyres plc was founded in 1988 and it was listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange in 1995. The company ?s roots go back all the way to 1898, when Suomen Gummitehdas Oy, or the Finnish Rubber Factory, was established. Passenger car tyre production began in 1932 and the company ?s best-known brand, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta tyre, was launched in 1936.
