HJ says, in his CBC breakdown "Plastic fuel filler pipe between cap and tank can develop hairline cracks leading
to petrol fumes entering the cabin when the tank pressurises". Are there any other causes of (strong) petrol
smells in these cars (2.0 ecotec hatchback)? Is there a DIY remedy?

the tanks leak on the welded joint
ie when you exceed half a tank
could it be this?

Thank you for your reply. I rarely put in more than 1/2 a tank, although if the juice slops about inside it might
slop over. Where should I look to see? The smell is quite pronounced, and Something Must Be Done.

ideally on a ramp, you will see the tell tale smear and smell the fumes.

I will have a look. I haven't a ramp, but I do know where there'a a nice high kerb :)

Is the smell in the engine bay or just inside the car?

The rubber fuel lines from the rail to the feed pipes down the back of the engine often got porous. See if any look dark after running it for a short while.

Agree. One of these sprung a leak on my mk2 SRi.

" Where is this?"

From memory - offside rear of car near petrol tank, tucked up next to rear axle.

It's certainly inside the car - but it doesn't always absolutely stink, just sometimes (there's normally a discernable smell, though). I have removed the 5l petrol container from the "boot", and it wasn't that.

I will have a look at them. I assume there are four!

I can't smell any strong petrol smell from under the bonnet after an 8-mile run. The inside of the car does smell, though.

Neither can I see any dark pipes behind the engine. All the pipey bits merely look dusty. There's some oil on a springy boxy thing behind the top of the engine, which I assume is to do with the throttle linkage.

The boot does whiff quite strongly of petrol.
