ford focus - road noise - slack
hi,

I have just brought a 55 plate 1.6 LX focus i like the car drives well enough, but the road noise is quite bad
it is fitted with bridgestone tyres, has anyone any idea's how to reduce the road noise.

thanks slack.

Ask a Ford dealer what makes and models of tyres are currently fitted by Ford. This should help reduce the number of possibilities.

I had an Escort in the past on Firestones(Bridgestones) and when I changed to Goodyears, the noise level was much less tho' no change to the grip. All seems to be in the tread pattern.

thanks L'escargot,

The car is going in to the ford dealer next week i will ask about the tyres then,

cheers slack.

there is aTSB out for road noise on a focus so your ford dealer will know because I cant remember whether its to do with the rear bearings
Good luck

Road noise with Foci and the question of tyre type have been common threads on this forum. The concensus seems to be that Foci are noisy (annoyingly so) and that the problem wasn't solved in the new model. Other than this, together with thin paint and difficulties in changing bulbs, they are the finest cars on the planet.

hi ,

can any one tell me what TSB is, and is the new shape focus 1.6 100bh LX engine chain driven cam shaft or
belt driven.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin.

I have a 2006 1.6 LX Focus and must agree regarding the road noise issue. It is far and away the noisiest car I have owned. Mine is fitted with Pirelli P7's (205/55/16), but I understand changing the tyres will make little difference. I had wondered about fitting extra sound proofing but have now decided to change the car for something a but quieter !.

Prior to the Focus I owned a 2001 Seat Leon which was far superior in every way.

I understand the 1.6 petrol engine in the new focus is chain driven (www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/faq.htm?id=54 )

How would you describe the road noise? I've just had the tyres changed on my Mazda 323 (which coincidentally is a sister to the Ford Focus ) and I've noticed quite a racket at speeds above 40mph that initially made me think it was from the gearbox or drive shafts. The tyres are budget variety but not remoulds and I can best describe the noise as 'whirring'
ford focus - road noise - slack
hi Galad,

The noise i get is tyre to road noise druming sort of sound, rougher the road the worse the noise.
Aiso wind noise once over 50 mph quite bad.

cheers everybody for your contributions,

The TSB relates to excessive road noise & it suggests that the front hubs are slackened & retightened to 300-332 nm
ford focus - road noise - slack
hi injection doc,

thanks for your input, but how does slacking and retightening the front hubs reduce the road noise.
I am going into ford tomorrow an i will ask the question.

Do post your findings, as my new Focus TDCi suffers much the same problem re: road noise.
ford focus - road noise - injection doc
Hi Slack, I just remembered reading a TSB a long time ago & managed to find a reference on it. I don't know whether your dealer will iether know about the TSB without looking it up or won't admit to it. There's no garentee it will cure yours as it could be tyres or diff noise but you never know.
I cant answer your question as to why it should reduce noise, I could only sumize that it reduces the preload on the wheel bearings. It may be that at the factory they where too tight but I don't suppose we'll ever know, but worth a try.

I'm sorry you got the cloth & dagger treatment from a Dealer & what amazes me is that they moan about poor sales most of the time but it begs the question would you go back!. You could try contacting Autodata ltd in Berkshire & whether if you spoke to them nicley they might be able to e-mail you the technical note or recomend an independant garage near to you that has the program with the technical information on it so you could go along & see for yourself. I have to say I had worked in main dealerships in the past & it can be an embarresment to be there with the carass way they handle some customers. If they had offered you the help & it reduced the noise you would probably go back & buy another car at some stage but now they have left you uninspired.

Lets hope plenty of sound proofing & tyres help

hi injection doc,

Thanks for all your help,I suppose i could just turn the radio Ha Ha.

Have you looked up autodata & tried ringing them yet, worth a call as they get TSB's and you can e-mail them. Whilst this may not be your problem at least it will prove how the dealers try to cover things up at your expense. You wouldn't want to fit new tyres & add loads of sound proofing & find £20 to retighten front hubs cures it!

Michelin Primacy HP work well on Focus's, quiet etc. Having the correct tyre pressures is vital for ride comfort and quietness.
For the Michelin use 30psi for front and rear for normal loads, higher pressures will cause a noticably harsher and jiggly ride.
The manual gives a higher pressure and the driver door floor/side plate says something else, stick to the tyre manufacturers
recommended pressures and you'll have be spot on for tyre/car match.

Manufacturer stated tyre pressures are not always right, on my old Audi A4 I swear that using the 'correct' front tyre pressure caused a harder ride and for the tyres to wear in the centre and not on the edges. A couple of pounds down from this seemed okay.

hi ijection doc,

rang autodata they had look for the TSB on road noise and re tighting front hubs, but no joy, they said would look
further and ring me back but have herad nothing as yet.

Hi Slack, right its definatley in the 2007 edition of autodata under known problems with ford focus, tell them to look up focus & click on yellow triangle for known faults & fixes & its there. I have now seen it for myself.
I hope they ring you back so that they prove themself more worthy than a dealer. Its under the heading excessive road noise

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you don't like the level of noise, why did you buy the car? Wasn't it noticeable when you took it for a test drive?

hi injection doc,

Have had a email back from autodata they say they have found information for the re tighting of the front and
rear hubs but only for the early model focus,no information on the new shape focus regarding this problem,
they are going to ask ford to confirm if this is a reoccurring problem on the new shape focus and amend thier
records.

regards slack.

P.S. thanks to everybody who has sent in emails.

hi ijection doc,

Have had a email from autodata they have found the TSB on road noise on the focus and yes it was
the tighting of the front and rear hubs but on the early models only.No information on it being a
problem with the new shape focus, but they are asking ford to confirm this.

regards slack.

P.S.thanks to everyone who sent in emails.

Hi Slack, at least Autodata got back to you, better service than a dealer eh!. Prehaps when a tyre change due it will improve. tyres are a big issue with noise these days but they are so big compared to 20years ago or more when we used to run around on almost bycicle tyres in comparison

Hi slack. My wifes new mazda 3 (which is 40% focus) has Yokohama Aspec tyres fitted. These are fitted as standard to new face lifted mazda 3's to help reduce road noise(along with extra door seals, insulation). The car is noticeably quieter than the pre-face lifted models I have driven.I also concur with the reccomendation of Michelin HP's,which I have had fitted on my mazda 6.They are an improvement over the standard fit Bridgestone Turanza ER30 tyre.
