Hypoid gear Oil Question - KenC
I have had a garage clear out & found an unused sealed container of
SHELL SPIREX EP80 GEAR OIL, this is probably 30 years old.

My question,.......... is "EP80" the same oil specification as SAE 80 Hypoid gear oil. ?

Can anyone clarify this please ?
Hypoid gear Oil Question - MW
Not sure, but in 30 years the spec has improved a great deal. As it is only worth about £3, is it worth it?
Hypoid gear Oil Question - Aprilia
Essentially it is, yes. EP=Extreme Pressure.

However, EP additive technology has changed a lot in 30 years. The original additives have probably degraded anyway. I would use new oil.
Hypoid gear Oil Question - mjm
Don't bin it, use it in an oil can for general lubrication on things like bonnet hinges, throttle cables etc. It's a bit thicker than 3 in 1 type oils and tends to "hang around" for longer. Be aware that it smells a bit sulphury, though!
