Recommend me new pedals - David Horn
Just had an unpleasant incident when parking after my foot slipped off the clutch - I was wearing flat soled shoes and it was raining, but I, uh, nudged the car in front. No damage (as far as I can tell in the dark) - however, I've noticed over the last six months or so that the clutch pedal is getting slippery, so I'd like to replace it. Is it simply a matter of dropping by a dealer and grabbing a replacement rubber bit, or is there an aftermarket one which is likely to be grippier?

Could kick myself over this; I pride myself on my driving and I was only moving the car to a more convenient space!! Ironically, my dad reversed into someone this morning too so at least I had sympathy. :(

The solution is a new OEM pedal rubber and/or leather soled shoes.

Ta - local dealer is ordering new pedal rubbers for me. A closer look in the daylight reveals no obvious damage to either car. I actually bumped into an ancient and rusty Ford Escort which was already covered in dents with a badly fitting bumper, so I don't think I could have made it any worse. ;-)

ps, my dad reversed into another car for the second time in two days, so perhaps it's genetic...

Just a thought but IIRC you drive a Xsara? Could clutch wear or cable drag be requiring increased pedal pressure and associated risk of foot slippping?

Had similar issue with both a 205 and a BX.

Wouldn't say immense amount of pressure involved, or at least no change since I bought the car 3 years ago. Compared to my brother's Rover 75 it's light as a feather. My foot just slipped sideways off the pedal - accentuated by the fact I was wearing shoes with flat rubber soles and the pedal was wet. :(

........ I was wearing shoes with flat rubber soles

Get leather soled shoes. You'll have no more slipping on the pedals, and because they absorb perspiration instead of letting it slosh about inside the shoes they'll be healthier for your feet.

What about roughing up the surface of the pedal rubber or even sticking some fine emery cloth on the pedal? It is black and wouldn't look odd and is very 'grippy'.

Can't see that catching on as an alternative to drilled alloy... :-)

My car has Ripspeed pedals. Bigger, shiny, comfortable and nice to see as well.
You can get it at Halfords.
