Hello everyone.
I know I ALWAYS post questions along the lines of "what do you think of x...." but has anyone driven, or does anyone own a Golf R32? A colleague is thinking of getting one and asked me my views, as a "car geek". Nice to have a good rep eh?

Friend has just got one (mk 4) a couple of months ago.
Good: Sounds glorious, very fast, very comfy seats, sticks to wet roads like glue, understated (sort of).
Bad: rock hard suspension, he's getting about 19 mpg overall.
He absolutely loves it.

I've been in one and to be honest it doesn't feel all that much quicker than a 180bhp 1.8T GTI. I haven't compared to power to weight ratios, but suspect the 4 wheel drive system is heavy. It still has all the other faults of the MK4 Golf though, like leaky tailgate washers, corroding wheels, dodgy windows etc etc. Expect may warranty claims!

Oh and they are scarily subject to frequent carjacks.

Re: quicker than the 1.8T. My mate changed from a 180 Leon Cupra, AFAIK the same engine and similar weight to the Golf, and the R32 is significantly quicker according to him, certainly in the wet.

He's looking at a new one, Mark V, so (hopefully) no probs like the Mark IV ones mentioned.....
Bit worried about those carjacking comments though.... are they that desirable?

Any fast car is potentially attractive for car jacking. Have been a few reports in the french papers of Megane 225's getting taken for high speed robberies. However, stealing a VW or Renault is not a good idea in my opinion.

Can get a 1.8T chipped to much better power / torque with little penalty in economy. My last car was a 200bhp 1.8T which did 40mpg usually - bit of a Q car 'cos in standard form they are not as such "fast"

A mate bought one last year, and I would generally agree. A nice car, with fantastic mid range punch but it still has that horrible, overassisted, numb VAG power steering. Steering feel is one of my fetishes and I couldn't buy a car that doesn't have it.
Cheers

PS - the comments above relate to the mkIV. Not driven a mkV
