W. Midlands Alloy Wheel Refurb? - Statistical outlier
My gf managed to kerb my front n/s alloy over the weekend. She's stripped off the protective bumper on the tyre, and gone thru the lacquer, putting a 10 cm long graze on the alloy.

Does anyone have a recommendation for someone in the W Mids who could sort this out for me? Also a ballpark for what would be a reasonable quote?

Also, I'm assuming that the bump strip on the tyre is not structural and I don't have to worry about it. Correct?

Cheers!

Gord.

I can recommend Lap-Tab.co.uk in Brimingham. They refurbished 4 x 15" alloys for me for £100. Excellent finish on them & lightening quick turnaround. However they were all a slightly darker silver than the original, but as I had all 4 done it wasn't obvious.

They look good, but the site appears to be geared to what you've had done - a complete refurb of a set of wheels. I'll ring them and ask, but maybe I've asked the wrong question? I'm wanting to get a single wheel repaired - there is only a 10 x 1 cm area of damage on one wheel. Could I just have that repaired, or is the fact that the wheels are a smoked grey colour (they are the Honda 17" 'Penta' alloys) a problem?

I knew that I'd seen it on here somewhere. FAQ #1. Duh.

Oh dear, a smoked grey wheel means a min £75 bill from the guys HJ recommends in Wolverhampton as they'll need to mix a colour up for me specifically.

Ask your Honda dealer - they must have a way of repairing them pre-sale.

Well, I've had the usual chip repair type people repair wheel damage cause by idiot tyre fitters scraping off stick-on weights with a scewdriver. The repair was completely invisible and that was on a colour-coded old Range Rover wheel. Unfortuanatly, I was not there to see him in action.

Haven't Halfords recently started offering dent / scratch / & alloy wheel repair services?

To be honest Dave I wouldn't let anyone in Halford's garb anywhere near any car of mine. I watched them attempt to change a set of wiper blades a while back..... Picture the scene, spotty 16 year old pulls old blade assembly off then fits one upside down, the second one didn't get fitted as he managed to knock the sprung loaded wiper arm (minus blade part) onto the screen and crack the screen. Also years ago in my youth I had an elderly Mazda 323 that I did an engine change on. Going to Halfords for gearbox oil I was told that the oil specified for my manual gearbox, listed in my handbook as ATF was just ordinary gearbox oil. Good job I researched further and found that although it was a manual 'box, it required automatic transmission fluid.

stuartl,
in any profession, whether it be tyre fitting, paint repair, dent removal, car servicing, etc, it all boils down to the individual who is doing the work. Yes, you *could* get one rotten egg in every basket, but you can't tarnish everyone who works at places like Halfords, etc with the same brush.

I have to agree with the worry about using Halfords, but I would presume these wouldn't be the same 6th formers they have there on saturdays. At least if you complain to Halfords they usually put things right. However, I think I'd like to hear a few success stories before using them myself.

I agree with the 'tarring with the same brush' sentiment entirely Dave. I am in the building trade and whilst I have been trading as an honest, skilled tradesman for 13 years some people still view all builders as cowboys. That aside, when I go into a certain large DIY store they claim to have qualified plumbers, electricians etc on their staff. I have heard these people offer advice that is out and out dangerous and I cannot believe they haven't been sued yet. My theory is, if these people ARE qualified tradesmen, why are they working in that store for less than 12 grand a year? Similarly, how are people expected to trust advice about cars from individuals who are in some cases aren't even old enough to drive a car, let alone be qualified enough to advise people on matters such as servicing, parts or repair.
Just another 100% true story, when I recently visited that same motoring store on a Sunday as my local independant was unreachable due to flooding I wanted a condensor for my Mk2 Escort engined kit car. Not only did they not have one, the person I asked behind the parts counter looked puzzled then said they didn't get involved with air conditioning as it was a specialist job. Ok, it is an old engine but there are still a few cars about with condensors and points aren't there???!!!
