Hi, can some of you tell me if the Freelander TD4 is any good?
Do they have reliability issue? Do they use a BMW diesel engine?
And if you think they are rubbish what mini 4x4 do you recommend?
Thanks
Mark..

If you must have Freelander, then the BMW sourced TD4 is the one to go for. At least you will be spared the thirst of the KV6 and the curse of the 1.8. Allegedly fixed, but I am yet to be convinced.
My money would be on something Japanese, possibly a RAV4.

I had a CRV and thought it was an excellent family car - the kids still hate me for chopping it in.
Its not really very good off road though.
For that I think you should go for the X-trail if you want off road ability.
Freelander - very bad car - steer well clear.

good friends have a TD4 and swear by it, this is their 2nd one and they are looking at the new one, so they must be reasonably happy with it........it's on an 03 plate.
I do know it's had all 4 diesel injectors replaced under warranty, though.......

Since when did an X-trail have any off-road ability?? Don't make us laugh.

>Freelander
Bad bad bad...like driving a large hippo on wheels.

My guess is that the response was in relation to the original question.
All 'off-roaders' of this category are rubbish off-road when compared to the proper big stuff. The X-trail is probably the pick of the bunch of the sub-20K 4x4s. The X-trail seems to command high second hand value.

Had one for nearly 3 years from new and 40,000 miles
1 small problem with a detached pipe on the heater and a failed turbo booster. Both fixed without fuss under warranty.
With regard to off-road ability I think Freelanders are unfairly maligned. They are not designed to be a Defender/Discovery. Ground clearance is their principal weakness off road but if you go down deeply rutted tracks very frequently then you probably wouldn't be in the market for a Freelander in the first place.
Horses for courses.

I had a top spec one for a day to do with as I wished a while back and was most impressed. If you need modest road/track ability they are fine. I liked the cabin and thought the ride excellent for the vehicle type. A huge improvement over the earlier model.

Maybe the newer ones are sorted.
