current car, Rover 75 - 227,000
|
Two Mk2 Golf GTis,
First one 201,000, written off when shunted from behind
\\second one 234,000, still going strong on same engine/gbox
|
'B' reg. Peugeot 305 estate - 279,000 miles, the last 50K with a rebuilt engine. Finally sent to the happy hunting grounds due to severely toed-out rear suspension, u/s speedo and cracked windscreen. I owned it for 16 years, it only let me down on the road once, due to a leaking petrol pipe.

Vauxhall Nova 1.0 saloon.
192,000. and then the metal worm got it. (engine was suffering from serious wear as well)
|
Had a 1989 Saab 900 2.0 8v a couple of years back with 236k miles on the clock.
Bought the car for £150 with 6 months test and 3 months tax on it. Brilliant car.
Eventually sold it for £200 with 1 months test left.

Vauxhall Nova 1.0 saloon. 192,000.
Wow
|
93 Xantia 1.9 TD - 224,000 miles on the original engine, turbo and gearbox. Only major work in the history was a clutch and 2 replacement hydraulic pumps. Its still in use locally by a painter and decorator and I got shut of it in Dec 03 so i'd guess it would be on 250k+ now.

|
>> Vauxhall Nova 1.0 saloon. >> 192,000. Wow
It was doing 40+ mpg right to the end, this meant that I realy did stop more often to repair it than to refuel.
|
Ford Laser Capri 1.6
255,000 miles
|
1994 306 1.9TD, just turned 182 k but is still only my second car in 6 years of driving. Was on 120k when I bought it 3 and a half years ago.

We once sold an old Nissan Sunny Est to local chimney sweep - had 250k on it and he ran it until the head cracked at 320k.
There is a Nissan Primera taxi in my part of the world with 500k and still has all original engine and transmission.
A friend who is an auto transmission rebuilder apparantly rebuilt a Merc autobox out of a car with 700k on the clock - but I didn't actually see that one. He regularly rebuilds the Jatco autoboxes out of the cabs, and they often have stupid miles on them.
|
A friend of mine had a Mk1 Fiesta which blew its gearbox at 180,000.
Highest ive owned is a Jaguar XJ6 3.2 with 158,000 on it, drove like new.
I used to work at a place where the old Dodge tow truck ( early 1980's one ) had just over the million on it.
Ive seen a Lexus LS400 with 370,000 on it, still ran silent too. the driver who brought it back to the paintshop said he just couldnt believe how well it drove.
|
I nominate Cliff Pope's Volvo 240. 349,000 miles and counting.
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=44...8
And Dave_taxi_driver's Skoda Octavia had racked up quite a few miles as well back in Nov 2004.
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=27...9
If by chance he's still got it, the mileage must be half way to the moon by now.
Highest ones I owned were my 1.3 Mk1 Astra. 104,000 miles, when I sold it.
Later, a 1.8 Mk2 Cavalier that had 155,000 miles on it, but had a recon engine fitted at 135,000 by the previous owner. I ran it for 5,000 miles, then sold it on.
|
1983 Sierra 1600L manual (5spd) - 235,000 miles on the clock when it died with suspected oil pump failure.
Original clutch went to 130k.
Water pump, alternator and coil around the 150k mark.
And then nothing after that, apart from the anti-roll bar to lower arm bushes which were a biannual job for most Sierra owners and just considered a service item.
Have also owned a 1986 mk2 Cavalier 1.8 SRi, a 1987 Rover 216 Vitesse EFi and the current 2000 Mondeo with between 100k and 150k. The Cavalier was still a pleasure to own and drive, as is the Mondeo. The Rover however was a complete nightmare. A new oil leak or engine management/ electrical fault almost weekly. The only plus point was I made a £200 profit on it when I sold it on after 2 months. Not to anyone I know I hasten to add.
Cheers

250k miles in a rover 620gsi. It was a honda engined one. I bought it at 247k miles and sold it at 250k. It was running beautifully
|
Oh I thought this was most mileage covered in a car you own.
In that case the 306, 65,000 when I sold it. Still hardly impressive.
The Toledo is on 63,000, and that won't be going up anywhere near as quickly now as I have new job half the distance away. Only thing is that the parents might be getting a place in Cornwall - it will skyrocket then. I love 'Kernow'. :^D

I traded in a 1988 Peugeot 405 when it hit 11 years and 146,000 miles. It had been burning oil for about 50,000 miles, although not that badly, but was starting to cost an absolute fortune to keep on the road. It had a twin carburettor with an automatic choke, which just didn't work. No matter how many times I replaced the waxstat on it, within a couple of weeks it was inoperative again.
Frustratingly, it would start first time from cold, or when it had only just been switched off, but it was an absolute nightmare to start from lukewarm. The drive shafts had gone, the suspension was needing attention, and the brakes, like every PSA vehicle I've ever had, gave continuous problems (squeaking, dragging, binding etc). Despite only being a 1.6, I was struggling to get more than about 26-27 miles per gallon. I don't believe it was scrapped at that point though, and I did get £800 for it.
|
I can't beat some of these at all but mine has 85k on it now - 40k of which are mine.
|
Oh I thought this was most mileage covered in a car you own.
That's what it says. It doesn't say most miles YOU have covered in the car.
|
My first car - Vauxhall Belmont Astra 1.6GL - Stolen with 120k miles. I had the car for 1.5 years, put on 8k miles, not a hint of trouble.
|
Vauxhall Belmont Astra 1.6GL - Stolen
My mate had one at uni and in the end he gave up getting the locks fixed. He'd just recover it from wherever it had been dumped, start it with a screwdriver and drive it around until the next time.
Got nicked six times in a year before they finally burnt it out.
|
Had a diesel Astravan, got it at about 149K and stopped driving it at 196K when I left the company. Hammered senseless all it's life and still went as well as a new one. My current car was bought with 137K on the clock.
Steve.

Xantia HDi.
Buy a Citroen and get to know the local GSF staff better...
|
How about this - 110k (just under actually) in an Alfasud Ti. And then it just died of rust.....
|
Nissan Sunny, 115k on the clock (30k of which was mine). The engine was getting a bit old, and the carb wanted stripping, so I got rid.
My uncle owned a G-reg Vauxhall Carlton 2.0i for about 10 years, during which time he put 250k on the clock, on the original engine, gearbox and (believe it or not) clutch! Heard of a Cavalier with the same old 8v petrol lump with 380k on the clock too.
Also, when I was at an auction a few months back, a retired minicab, in the form of a Seat Toledo, came through sounding like a steam train, and it had 620k on the clock! (by the sound of the engine, it was the original!)
|
Hows this then
I have never, ever had a car with more than 70k showing on the clock,

Bit rough with them then are you TVM? Or just very rich?

Both Lud.
Reminds me, the ashtray on this one is full of cavier wrappers, time for a trip to the showroom i think

1984 Toyota camry - 1.8 turbo diesel. 280,000 miles...ran really well until it was written off. Other than rust it was fine, but it was worthless by write-off time. But it was a well used bargain I think!!!
|
Two BX's, one with 170k on the clock before sold to a friend, one with 150k also sold to a friend - both went on further before being sold on. Neither ever broke down, neither ever had engines (XUD diesels) touched during my ownership

And since the 192,000 nova mentioned above, a renault 19 1.4 auto that got to 135,000 then was sold as spares/repair as the transmission failed. The buyer had an almost identical car with wrecked bodywork as a doner car.
And currently a ford escort with 20,000 showing at 8 years old, so presumably 120,000. (Did ford think escorts wouldn't last past 100,000?)
The escort is the lowest milage car I've owned.
|
Surprising that most of the cars mentioned are ordinary bread and butter stuff, not the sort of car you would automatically assume as being capable of such mileage.
My (insignificant) record is 120k in a Vectra 1.6.

Recently had a Pug 405 turbodiesel with 178k on the clock, still drove well and (oddly) the interior still looked like new. Was a bit of a pain to start sometimes though.
Wife took a '94 Golf 1.4CL from 50k miles to 142k miles over 6 years, original clutch and exhaust apart from the tailpipe, which dropped off at 135k miles. Tough little car!
|
Our '94 Passat 1.9 TDI estate has done only 164,000 miles.
|
I saw in last weeks telegraph: 360,000 miles from an XJS jaguar in a few years.
And motorcycle wise, I saw 182,000 miles from the Ride Magazine. It was an older BMW.
|
I saw in last weeks telegraph: 360,000 miles from an XJS jaguar in a few years.
wasn't it a 2.5 X Type, manual..........or was that another one.........the article i saw was a DJ who bought it cheap off his company, the first driver being a rep who regularly drove to Scotland and didn't like staying in hotels...
had a monstrous mileage..and very little wrong with it
|
I used a pug 605 auto diesel for mini-cabbing 12 years ago and sold it with 225,000 on it, only changed the belt once, didnt use any oil but the gearbox was starting to get jerky.
|
Pug 405 Style, non-turbo on an 'M' plate: 370,000. Changed oil every 5k with non-mineral 'cheap' Wilco brand. The engine was about the only thing working in the end.
|
not one i owned but a cavalier diesel taxi d reg 420000 clapped out but still under plate at time
|
I work for a courier company and we have a ford fusion 53 plate with 319,000 miles on it, although ford have it for a day each month and maintain it
|
cavalier - the last of the true peoples' cars.
|
Peugeot 407 06 reg 1.6HDi , owned it from 20,000 miles....now has 106,000 miles.
At 90k the problems started, 2 Particulate filters, 2clutch and flywheels, eloys fluid top up, All drop-links, two front lower ball joints, and ive still got a leaking gearbox..
Ive seen a friend get his 2.0 HDi to 280,000 (taxi)

'
1983 Sierra 1600L manual (5spd) - 235,000 miles on the clock when it died with suspected oil pump failure.'
Must be a few more miles left in mine then,'89 estate,1.8 CVH,currently on a mere 111000,although recently fitted a new Weber carb.Having a manual choke to think of is like going back in time(or do you need a DeLorean for that?)
|
1997 Audi A4 TDi 110 SE Bought in May 2000 at 94k traded in still going strong at 185k in May 2005.
|
103,000 on a P reg 1.6D (non turbo) Peugeot 306. This mileage is no great shakes as I now know. But, the interesting thing is, before poking my nose into this forum a couple of years ago, I had thought that anything over about 40,000 was due for scrapping! A very helpful site.
|
187K on am N reg Renault Trafic van. It was at this time that the diff collapsed. The van was sold on ebay for £250 for spares or repair.
Soon after I sold it I bumped into the guy that bought it and asked him if he'd got it sorted. He told me he couldn't find a replacement diff for it for reasonable money so he had sold it on for around the same money he'd paid for it.
|
I'm just coming up to 200k in my 1995 Espace diesel Alize bought new. Engine seems fine but electrical niggles and blower motor on the way out could signal a sale on Ebay soon !
|
And Dave_taxi_driver's Skoda Octavia had racked up quite a few miles as well back in Nov 2004.
Did somebody mention me? :-D
I sold it at 267k not long after that, bought a 53 reg 406 HDi estate on 28k which I took up to 167k before it got hijacked and torched...
The Skoda, I gather, ran for another year up to 340k before finally falling to pieces.
I've also had a 95M Mondeo TD showing 328k and a 96P 405 estate showing 360k.
I suppose I ought to change my user name now, for the last 6 months I've been earning a living driving a V-reg MAN 8-163 with 780,000 km on the tachograph.
Nice to see you all again.
Dave TD. (truck driver!)

Ford Laser Capri 1.6 255 000 miles
Thats very impressive considering how 'short-lived' engines and gearboxes of this era were. You must have looked after it like a baby !
