hi throttle is sticking open all of a sudden at about 1500 revs is there anything I could check cos it is obviously going to guzzle more petrol, car is a 98 vectra v6 auto
have checked that it is returning ok and you can't push it back any further so guess it might be sucking air somewhere
ta in advance

I had exactly the same thing.
It is a common problem with this V6 caused by the butterfly valve getting gummy and sticking open a smidge.
Easy, if fiddly, to clean with carburettor cleaner.
|
BTW - my butterfly valve also felt that it was fully "home" from the perspective of pressing the actuation arm, but infact a small air bleed past it was still present.

where is the butterfly valve and what do you have to do to get at it

In the induction pipe leading to the large plenum chamber (manifold) on top of the engine.
With the engine off get someone to press the throttle pedal and in the engine bay you'll see the butterfly actuator moving. The butterfly valve is a large disc inside the tube that the actuator is fitted to. Having found it, getting to it should be obvious by removing the gubbins from the air filter pipe.
From the sound of your question though - offence not meant - this is quite basic so if you need to ask, a car mechanics bent is absent and I suggest someone else does it for you. It shouldn't take them long.

and also forgot on the same car on a morning when you first start car there is a whining / whistling / screach from a black box on the right hand side of the engine bay next to where you fill washer bottle up it goes off after about 300yds think it might be something to do with the aircon any ideas guys

Depending on the age of your car, it'll either be the Exhaust Gas Recirculation or Secondary Air Injection valve. They basically do the same thing, that being an aid to warming up the catalytic convertor a bit quicker. Nothing to worry about - it's just some are noisier than others.
As for your other problem, it's as SJB says, or the idle speed control valve sticking.

Dave, is that really true?

thanks guys will strip it and give it a clean

Be careful not to scratch the inside bore of the throttle body or to damage the butterfly valve; carburettor cleaner, a lint free rag, and plenty of time and patience are the order of the day. Good luck.

Oops. Perhaps not strictly true. But they do help to reduce emmissions.
It's the Secondary Air Injection that aids cat warm up time.

A 98 Vectra V6 has both Exhaust Gas Recirculation and Secondary Air Injection, the latter makes the noise for the first couple of mins of running from cold.
