Ford Escort 1.8 TD starting trouble - fab-gav
Hi guys, have read to death about ford's starting troubles with diesels but needs help spesific to my problem.

The car is a M reg escort 1.8TD

It started and ran for abit, then cut out, had break down people out who said it could be filters etc etc he primed the filter which i belive is the bosch type? the black plastic bit you push is on a angle at the top of the filter housing.

anyway, it ran fine for a few days then did the same again, once again the breakdown people came, he said it prob fuel filter or pump, primed it, and it ran.

Now though,t it wont start at all.
I have changed the filter (and the seals it came with) and 2 glow plugs (only 2 cuz the other 1 is rusted in, and the other you cant reach very well (i'd had enough by this time))

Still no good, but even if i prime it it wont start.
Now my question is, when i prime it, it takes ages befor it starts spitting fuel out the block bit and becomes stiff to push.
should it?
Also there is a hissing noise when it goes in and out.....so to me this says the diaphram is knackered but i would like some more expert views?
Also when left for a few mins there is now pressure in the filter after being primed.

any help? cheers

the rubber in the filter housing has perished letting in air, replace the whole filter assy, you can buy them from lucas, but check the the way the pipes attach as there are different types for different years

Please see my other message regarding the fuel pump test.

forgot to say, i tested in a fashion the fuel pump by removing all the fules lines into the filter and the one into the throttle body and turned it over for about 10seconds, no fuel came out of anywhere ???

With regards to the different types, how can i tell which one i need from the one on there already?
cheers

A part like that shouldn't cost too much from a Ford main dealer - and they'd have more of an idea which part it is.

Okay, got a new one, fitted it, primed it.........still wont start :(

The fuel pipe that goes right across the front of engine and into the 'throttle body'
should that always has diesel in it?
Because if i take it off nothing comes out but i can suck for awhile and the deisel will come.

Anyone advise??
