Head gasket not gone but should i change - adam f
My car has done 97k and there is no reciept / sign of the head gasket being replaced.
Due to the car having reletivly high miles, should i have the head gasket replaced?

the car is a 97 hyundai coupe 2.0se.

what should i expect to pay?

absolutely no.
Only change the head gasket when it fails or the head has to be removed.
there is no need to change it as a service item - even on a Rover K series !

Is it possible you are thinking of the cambelt (if the car has one), adam f?
Head gasket not gone but should i change - adam f

that was changed at 80k

Shame some car manufactuers can't follow that as well.

Why would you want to? All you need do is flush the cooling system every few years and put in new antifreeze/inhibitor.

Head gasket failures usually occur as a result of poor servicing i.e. infrequent coolant and oil changes and failing to spot cooling system problems such as a leaking radiator or hose resulting in overheating. Mileage is usually irrellevant. However, some cars seem more susceptible to head gasket problems, such as the Rover 214 and in my case the Peugeot 306 with the old 1.9 XUD engine. Only change the HG if you know it's on it's way out i.e. coolant and oil cross contamination, car drinking coolant like there's no tomorrow, excessive coolant pressure, poor starting and compression etc.

I wouldn't change it; the only two i've need to have done were an Omega at 126K and a Cavalier at 185K.
