Urgent help about 320 Ci required - Blue {P}
Can anyone confirm whether a 2000 X reg 320 Ci would have had the 170bhp 2.2 litre engine or a less powerful one? Someone has told me that the 2.0 in this car may in fact be a 150bhp M52 engine.

I've tried CBC but can't figure it out...

According to Wikipedia (not guaranteed to be accurate of course) in a 2000 320Ci you could have either engine.

My 1990 525i, for example, had the M50 engine in it, which "officially" wasn't used until 1991.

Try posting the question on the bimmer.info forum. But the only way to know for certain, I'd imagine, is to get someone who knows to have a look at it.

Thanks, the seller has assured me that the engine is the 2.2 litre but couldn't answer the power output question. My guess is that this would make it the 170bhp M52 engine, will keep checking as I don't want to travel to Derby only to find out it's the wrong one!

It appears that there are two variants of the M52 that have been used in the 320i - a 2.0 (up to 2000) and later a 2.2, plus 2.2 M54. Not sure what the difference is between the M54 and M52 in 2.2 form - they seem to get used interchangeably.

If it's a 2.2 engine then it sounds like it is probably the M52B22 engine for the year 2000 which has somewhere in the region of 170bhp, yes. But, y'know, get it checked out. Can the seller give you a scan/copy of the relevant bit of the V5?

IIRC the 320 2.0 six was a saloon only, the coupe range went 318Ci, 323Ci and 328Ci.

Then when the range was revised in about 2000 the 320 became a 2.2 six, as did the 520, and a 320Ci was introduced alongside the 318Ci, and 323 became 325 and 328 became 330 as per the saloons.

So if I am right a 2000 X reg 320 Ci would have the 170bhp 2.2 litre engine.

I thought the 2.2 170bhp version came in with the facelifted 3-series of 2001, if this helps at all...

No about a year before, there are pre facelift 325s and 330s as well the earliest being on a X plate where as the facelift was 51 plate on.

2000 would be the changeover year I think. Easiest way would be to get the seller to just tell you the engine number.

From HJ's CBCBD.

"2-door CI version arrived in spring 1999 ...................... 320 gained new 170bhp 2,171cc six in September 2000. Facelift September 2001"

As I thought there was no 320Ci between spring 99 and Sept 2000, it was 318, 323 and 328 only so the car Blue refers to must be late 2000 and a 320Ci 2.2 unless someone has been doing some badge engineering.

Sorry not sure myself, ask for the Vin number, and pop into a BMW dealer - that way you can be sure to have the correct info.

I've got the chassis and rang BMW customer services who say they will get back to me today, the seller has since rung me back to tell me that he has spoken with BMW and that they say it is the 170bhp model, I'm still waiting for them to get back to me to confirm or deny.

The car looks to be much better equipped than the 323 I was originally going to buy, granted it's a bit pricier at £7K but I think the difference in age and spec is worthwhile.

Actually I dont think the 2.0 6cyl was fitted to the E46 at all, saloon, touring or coupe.

Ahhh, Cheddar has spotted something in the CBC that I have overlooked, in that case this is definately a 320 170bhp model as BMW have confirmed that it was manufactured in September 2000, although they were strangely unable to confirm exactly what engine it had for some reason.

It'll need revs to keep it moving swiftly - characteristic of small capacity 6 cyl cars.

That's always been OK with me, but try to drive it first to make sure you're ahppy with the limited torque at low revs.

I am 100% sure that it is 170bhp, if it is indeed 2200cc.

It was nagging at me however I was slightly wrong above, there was never a 2.0ltr 6cyl E46, the last 2.0 6cyl 320i was the 150 bhp E36.

The E46 range went 316, 318, 323 and 328 then when the range was revised in 2000 the 2.2 six was introduced as the 320i / Ci alongside the 318i / Ci, and the 323 became 325 and 328 became 330.

It was the E39 that used both the 2.0 150 and 2.2 170 engines pre and post facelift

Put the last 7 digits of the VIN into this site

www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do

and it will identify the car together with a breakdowm of all the car parts/part numbers/specification etc etc

quite a useful resource
but
BMW / MINI only I'm afraid

Thanks for all your help guys, I didn't buy it in the end, it made a strange noise when started from cold that quietened but didn't disappear when warm, my dad says he's never heard that on a BMW before so we decided to leave it where it was on the forecourt!
