My wife used to have a V-reg 1.2 8v and I remember getting the cambelt done by a Fiat dealer for £100 all in, but that was 2 years ago and their rates have gone up since. I remember being told by the service manager that it was one of the easier belt changes, particularly when compared with the 5-cylinder Mareas/Bravos which were apparently an engine-out job!

I used to have a V-reg Sporting myself and I seem to remember that the 2 camshafts were geared together, with a much narrower angle than usual between the two sets of valves, so that there was only one camshaft pulley - some sort of space saving thing as I recall. Presumably this makes it easier to change than would be the case otherwise, as you only have one pulley to align. My recollection may not be perfect (I sold the car 5 years ago) so best to check Haynes or something.

Hope this is of some help.

I've changed the belt/tensioners on the 8 valve Fiat engines previously and it was really easy. However, the 16 valve engine is a bit more complicated, as you need to get special cam locking tools etc. In the end I got a local independent Fiat specialist to change the cambelt on my 16 valve engine and it cost £200 all in, including the tensioner.

the 8 valve is a piece of cake, but for the 16 valve is a lot of work, nearly 3 hours with ac, and special tools needed, 4 special tools in fact, best get it done by a proffessional

autodater states that it needs checking every 36k, and changing every 72k or every 8 years, whichever occurs first, the ford 1.25 engine only needs every 100k

never done 1, don't fancy doing 1 either!

And bit brave leaving a fiesta to 100k imo too.

"autodater states that it needs checking every 36k, and changing every 72k or every 8 years"

Subsequently revised down by FIAT (or, at least, strongly recommended) to change the belt at 4 years or 36k, and change belt and tensioners at 72k. Same goes for Alfas, btw.

I had my Ibiza cambelt changed at the recommended 60,000 miles but for the last few thousand of those I was a bit apprehensive. For safety I'd feel happier getting it done at least 10,000 early.
