ive just had the tracking done on my 306 which was 5 mm out and now its much better at fast speeds!
Ive noticed some play in the front drivers side wheel (side to side play)
Is this likely to be a ball joint or a bush?
theres no play up and down (i.e 12 o clock to 6 o clock)

Side to side (3 o'clock to 9 o'clock) is most likely to be the track rod end. Grip the joint and then get someone to waggle the wheel to feel the play. Trouble is, you'll have to get get tracking done again after you've fitted the joint...d'oh!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

i thought about that after i had the tracking done. It felt loads better but then when i felt the play in the wheel i thought that was a waste of £20!

If you've just had your tracking adjusted, and you go back and ask them very nicely, they may possibly agree to give you a free "Service Check and Adjustment" after a period since the initial tracking adjustment.
I've managed this in the past, as very often they say something like "Bring it back in 300 miles for a final check"
Worth a try?!!

the company are pretty good so maybe they will give it a quick check

Ir the tre has that much play I would have expected most decent places to have identified it before doing thre tracking!
